9. Family You Have, or Family You Choose

Taylor

That was finally off his chest. This man who offered himself to him—that was all he could ask for in that moment. More than he could ask for, even. Cable was a stable, solid man, one who did more than just entertain Taylor’s wild side—he encouraged it, never reprimanded him for it or tried to force him to be anyone else other than himself. His heart was pure and committed, and Taylor could not deny him, even if he wanted to.

The smile on Cable’s face was the warmth of the sun shining on his heart. His gray eyes glinted with unspoken emotions, and all of them were connected to love.

So that was it. Life was too short, and invariably, more often than not, unfair. Taylor decided to grab on, take what was offered, and protect it with everything he had. It started with an acknowledgment. One day, Taylor thought, it may lead to love itself.

Who was he kidding? He was almost there.

Cable pulled the robe off Taylor’s back, tossing it wherever it would land. Taylor felt himself being lowered gently to the sofa, with Cable’s muscular frame over him. His own legs were on both sides, and he was self-conscious of the way they’d feel on Cable’s skin—but the man didn’t care. His mouth lowered onto Taylor’s, and they were lost in each other’s kisses.

It would be countless long moments before either one let up on the other.

“You tired, baby?” Cable asked.

Taylor smiled, kiss-drunk. His lips were warm to the touch.

“Sleepy,” Taylor said.

With a dip of the mattresses, Cable left the sofa. He watched as the man removed each prosthetic with gentle care. When the limbs were finally separated, Cable did what he always did when he was the one to handle Taylor’s legs. He kissed each stump tenderly, as if kissing the pain away on the skinned knee of a crying child.

“Hold on to me, okay? I’m going to rinse us off,” Cable said softly.

Taylor nodded. He wrapped his arms around Cable’s neck while Cable supported him, holding him up as he did before with one hand at the small of his back, the other across his rear. His compact form fit against Cable snugly, warm and inviting like a glove to a hand. The touch was both soothing and arousing, and Taylor didn’t want to figure out which was which.

“Someone’s excited.” Cable grinned.

“Shut up. It’s the friction.”

Cable snickered. “Uh-huh.” He turned on the water. The shower chair was outside the tub.

“You don’t have to hold me up, Cabe. We can use the chair.”

“I'd like to do this together, if that’s all right by you.”

Taylor kissed Cable’s temple. “Okay.”

Cable briefly spared one hand to turn on the shower. He ran the water over his fingers until he was satisfied. When he stepped in, he faced the water so that Taylor’s back was to the shower.

“This good?” Cable asked.

“It’s better than good,” Taylor said as he looked into the man’s eyes.

Cable rocked from
