“Of course, my lady, Merlin will come to rescue you.” Each of his words echoed and the result was unnerving. “That is the main reason I took you. You are my bait. But he knows you will have a maiden fee and all you have to worry about is whether he will pay it or not.”

“I have no idea what you’re going on about!” she snapped. “I’m not up for sale! What fee are you talking about?”

“You do not come cheap. I make it my business to offer powerful people their heart’s desire, and whether you realise it or not, I suspect you are what Merlin wants, what his heart desires.”

“Do you only come out at night, Moloch? Because you— have—not—got—a—clue! Merlin is not the least bit interested in me.”

“Well, I do agree with you that it is hard to believe! You humans are a great mystery to me. I found it hard to believe when I was first told that a bitch like you, of all creatures, was his ladylove. But then I got proof. I watched him flood with jealousy when you kissed Pendragon and I knew I had him. And did you not just tell me he would rescue you?”

“Yes, I did, because that is what he does.” She spoke to him in a condescending tone as if he were a moron, someone who did not know the bleeding obvious. “Merlin rescues people, Moloch; he even rescued your bloody bats!”

She paused and tried not to think about Merlin being jealous of her with Jack. Instead, she stared at the rats tumbling over one another so she wouldn’t smile and reveal to Moloch how inside of her, at this very moment, there was a graceful butterfly spreading its iridescent wings and fluttering around. ‘How could someone like Merlin, who can spread himself across the sky like a sunrise, be interested in someone like me? I am a nobody person. I can’t race across the sky. How could he be jealous of me?’

But eventually her curiosity got the better of her and she asked,

“Anyway, what’s the maiden fee?”

“It is a price and it is not much. It is that Merlin works for me.”

“Doing what?”

“Whatever I want.”

“Merlin’s not going to be at your beck and call. That’s slavery! Look, I do not know him that well, but from what I’ve seen, he is a clever man who is playful and decent and fearless!” And Emily drew a deep breath, and speaking as loudly as she could without her voice quavering, continued: “I hope you heard that, Moloch! He is fearless and he would never do your bidding. So, what happens when he refuses to pay your price?”

This was the question Moloch had been waiting for and he wanted to relish every moment of her reaction. So he moved right in front of her, and stooping he laughed in her face.

“First, I will make him watch me as I break each of your knees with my stone mallet…”

“Oh dear, Moloch, I know what you mean.
