By the time we get upstairs, Merlin is waiting on the ring and a helping hand to get the spell finished. Sloan takes off his bone ring and gives it to me so we can check in with Laurel. Then, he takes the sapphire ring with him into Merlin’s lab.

“Is this really happening?” Laurel bounces on the balls of her feet as she stares toward the lab.

“It is. Considering how we got the spell, I’m confident it will work.”

“Where did you get the spell?” Benjamin asks.

I spend the next five minutes filling them in on the excitement of asking Mother Nature for her guidance going into the Culling and how this spell was the first thing on our list of things we’ll need.

“What do you think that means?” Laurel asks.

“I don’t know. There were no explanations, only the parchment with the three favors.”

Laurel seems to be lost in thought over that for a long while before nodding. “I think she meant for you to help me so Xavier would change his mind about remaining neutral and supporting the good guys.”

“You realize how ridiculous that is, don’t you?” Benjamin asks. He’s sitting on the couch with me, holding my hand so he can see and speak to Laurel. “Xavier is king of the vampires in Toronto. How do the vampires hold their place in the empowered world?”

I chuckle. “I realize asking the head of a crime family dealing in drugs and guns to support Team Light is a bit ironic, but maybe don’t look at it like good guys and bad guys. Maybe it’s more about justice and honor.”

“Xavier is very serious about honor,” Laurel says.

“I know, so maybe our objectives aren’t so far out of line with him and the vampires.”

Benjamin frowns, shaking his head. “It’ll never happen. He’s already getting persecuted for not actively joining in on the plans for taking over the city. Being neutral is costing him a lot.”

I didn’t realize that.

Damn it. I want to be mad at Xavier and stay mad at him. Why does he always have to be such a pain in the ass when beneath it all he’s a good guy?

He’s like a modern-day Mr. Darcy making arrangements behind the scenes to keep Elizabeth and her family from becoming social pariahs.

I exhale. “I suppose I should apologize to him.”

Laughter bursts from Laurel. “Definitely don’t do that. Vampires don’t apologize, Fi. No. The best thing to do is simply pretend you didn’t lose your mind, and he didn’t piss you off, and the two of you didn’t part in a cloud of dark smoke.”

Benjamin nods his agreement. “That’s exactly how vampires handle things like this. They pretend it never happened.”

I shrug. “Fine by me. I’m not really sorry anyway.”
