Chapter Fourteen

Anna settled back in the car seat. It was a far cry from her usual mode of transport. Thank god for Sam and her very rich boss.

After securing her seat belt, she reeled off her apartment address. For some strange reason, the driver asked if she was sure that was the correct address. Sam was also giving her an indecipherable look.

Anna flicked her gaze from Sam to the driver a few times. “Is everything ok?”

After a beat, Sam looked at her driver and told him to drive to the address Anna had given him. “How long have you lived there?”

“I rented it when I returned from England. After James and I went our separate ways, I thought it better to have a break. I’ve extended my stay for a while because it’s wonderful. A big step up from the little apartment I shared with James.” She couldn’t shake the feeling something had changed between her and Sam since getting in the car.

Sam nodded and then turned to look out of her window. She was deep in thought. The silence made Anna uncomfortable. She just hoped that Sam would tell her if she had done something wrong.

Following Sam’s lead, Anna turned to gaze at the scenery whipping past. It wasn’t too late in the evening, so there were still plenty of people sitting outside cafes and restaurants chatting with friends and loved ones.

Anna wished she could turn back time to when she had been sitting with Sam laughing and chatting, getting to know each other. They were getting on so well, Anna had especially enjoyed the mild flirting and meaningful looks. That seemed to be a distant memory now as they sat in awkward silence.

The car pulled up to the curb opposite her building. Anna turned to Sam, ready to say goodnight, but Sam had thanked her driver and was exiting the car. What the hell was going on? Surely Sam didn’t think she was being invited up to her place, not after one date and not after Sam had assured her they would take it slow.

Puzzled, Anna climbed out of the car and shut the door. She stared at Sam, hoping to get an explanation as to what was happening. Sam shoved her hands in her pockets and studied her feet. “Tonight was fun.”

“Yes, it was... but... I’m sorry if you misunderstood something. It’s just I’m not ready to invite you in.” Anna hoped Sam wouldn’t feel rejected.

“I wasn’t expecting an invitation. I’m going back to my place.”

“Right... ok then... I’ll call you soon.” Anna began walking backwards toward her building, her eyes still firmly on Sam.

“Yeah, I look forward to it.” Sam turned round to the building behind her. Anna stopped in the middle of the road. What the hell is she doing?

“Night,” Sam called before yanking the door open and disappearing inside.

Anna stood rooted to the spot for several seconds. What is happening right now?

Finally regaining control of her body, she forced herself into her apartment building. Her mind was going a thousand miles a second.
