âYe know, Asher, the next time ye get a good feelinâ, why donâ ye go ahead anâ bury it deep down, where it canâ bother people?â
Asher wiped some of the rain dripping from one of his eyebrows, not even bothering to look down at the dwarf. âI didnât push you in the holeâyou fell.â
Doran, whose appearance was well hidden beneath the wet mud, looked up at the ranger with cold fury in his eyes. âA hole ye say! It was a grave! Anâ ye shoved me, ye dolt!â
âI walked past you,â Asher corrected, âand you lost your footing.â
âI know exactly where Iâm goinâ to lose me foot!â the dwarf threatened.
âGentlemen!â The barkeeperâs voice cut through their mounting argument, reminding both that they were standing in a crowded tavern. âCan I help you?â he asked, his inquisitive gaze drifting over the four strange companions.
âAye,â Doran was quick to respond. âIâll take a room, a bath, anâ all the Hobgobbers Ale yeâve got. Anâ I mean all.â
The burly man leant over the bar to better see the dwarf. âAnd erm⦠Youâve got the coin for all that then?â
Before the son of Dorain could respond with some biting retort, Asher placed a hand on his pauldron and spoke first, though he quickly came to regret touching the mud-coated armour. âWe are rangers by trade,â he told the man as he dripped rainwater all over his floor. âWe have been investigating the fiends that have been disturbing graves in the west field.â
âFiends?â The barkeeper scratched his head. âIn the west field?â
âThe grave robbers,â Asher cajoled. âWe saw the noticeââ
âMonsters you mean?â The barkeeperâs eyes widened, the beginnings of a great smile on his ruddy face. âYouâve been hunting monsters in the west field?â He began to laugh hard. âDid you hear that?â he called out, gaining the attention of the other patrons. âThese fellas have been hunting monsters in the west field!â Now the entire tavern was laughing with him.
Russell leant in to speak in Asherâs ear. âIs the laughing normal?â
The ranger could but give the man a look, his own ire rising to unsteady heights.
âWe believe,â Hadavad said, attempting to speak over the ruckus, âyour graveyard is plagued by Trakians!â
âBy what?â the barkeeper managed through his amusement. âThem robbers were caught,â he told them. âAbout three months back. That notice you found was old, Iâm afraid.â
âCaught?â Doran nearly choked on the word. âIt were jusâ a couple oâ men!â
âHaving trouble finding monsters are you?â one of the patrons yelled above the din, instigating another wave of laughter from every corner.
âAm I missinâ somethinâ?â Doran grumbled, looking about.
The question set the barkeeper off again, his cheeks flushing red with laughter. âJust arrived have you, eh?â
Asher stepped forwards and leant ever so slightly over the bar, drawing the man in with a cold gaze. In the flickering gloom of the various flames, the rangerâs eyes lost their colour, and so he looked upon the barkeeper as a shark might look upon its prey. The amusement
