Eoin had surprised her, and that wasn’t easy to do. When Sari had gone into that exam room, she’d been prepared to clean the room herself before her next patient arrived. But to see him wiping down the table had been somewhat of a shock. Dr. Eric had certainly never offered to do any of those things. But then again, he’d been close to retirement and it had probably never crossed his mind to clean exam rooms since he didn’t sit in on appointments.

And for Eoin to joke about it had made her heart lighten. It had been a while since she’d been able to joke with someone of the opposite sex.

She hadn’t even joked that much with Max—which, looking back on their relationship, didn’t seem normal. And she certainly hadn’t with Dr. Eric, who’d, in her mind, been kind of an Eeyore figure. In fact, he was the one who’d asked them to call him Dr. Eric, since that’s what he’d had his patients call him.

In the time Sari had been at the clinic, the former obstetrician only been pressed into action a handful of times. In fact if the crisis with Janie had happened during the time when Eric Reynolds had been here, she probably would have bypassed him and called one of the other midwives for assistance. Cassidy was all smiles over the wonder of their impending entry into parenthood. They were newlyweds who’d wanted to have children right away and who, it looked like, had hit the jackpot. Unlike Sari, who’d had trouble getting pregnant while married to David and had opted to see a fertility specialist. It hadn’t been a fun time, and her fluctuating hormones had turned her into something of a monster. In the end, when the process had consumed them and started to affect their relationship, she’d opted to discontinue treatment and surprisingly had gotten pregnant with Evie and Hannah six months later.

She greeted the pair. “Hello, I’m Saraia Jones, and this is Dr. Mulvey. He is our clinic’s new resident doctor. Do you mind if he sits in on this first visit? He’s getting on track with how we operate.”

They looked at each other, and then Cassidy shrugged. “It’s okay with me. We’ll still have natural childbirth, right?”

“Absolutely—if everything checks out okay for that,” she said. “The next couple of appointments we’ll be doing a lot of measuring and tracking and I’ll be asking a lot of questions, just to make sure you have the safest delivery possible. So let’s get started, shall we?”

Eoin stood at the back of
