Gina stood in the ladies’ room and washed her face. She was so thankful there wasn’t anyone else there. But considering how busy it was, someone could come in at any moment. So she hurried to dry her face with a paper towel and practiced a wide smile in front of the mirror. It looked . . . pretty good.

Actually, she realized, she felt better now that she had cried. Or was it because Ewan had talked to her in a way few other people ever had? He hadn’t tried to smooth over rough edges or say it would get better. No. He had acknowledged the pain and been there for her. He had even said she was doing a good job with her family. He had said it plainly and therefore she believed him. She could never stand long-winded compliments or complicated explanations. Ewan was someone who spoke his mind. Or maybe he spoke what was in his heart. And he had a good heart.

Gina stared into her own eyes for a few moments. Ewan was important to her. More than just a colleague, someone she met here at the center, who was kind to her and helped with the twins. He was becoming a friend, or . . . whatever word she could fit to the feeling she had inside for him. A feeling that was just showing itself carefully like a little flower sticking its head out from under the winter snow.

The snow she hated so much. But it was melting. And it was making way for something new. Something special.

The door opened, and a mother and daughter came in. Gina smiled at them and left the room. She felt a little caught out, not by their arrival but by her own feelings. She wasn’t quite sure why but . . .

“Ah, Gina!” Granny waved at her from the counter of the gift shop area. A tall well-dressed man stood there with a full head of graying hair. As Gina walked over, his imposing figure struck a bit of awe in her like the school principal always had.

Granny said to the man, “This is Mrs. Gina Williams. Gina, this is Mr. Wilcox. He runs several large restaurants in Yewcreek and along the highway. He is very impressed with our apple pie.”

“You see, Mrs. Williams,” Mr. Wilcox said, taking Gina’s hand in his, “it is hard to find good apple pie for my restaurants. Often the dough is too sticky or the apple is mashed and the whole pie feels like a cheap product. But the pie here, the pie that you baked as I understood from Mrs. Grant here, is delicious. It has the perfect amount of raisins and that subtle hint of cinnamon. I want it in my restaurants. I would love to do business with you.”

“But I am just a one-woman business,” Gina said blinking.

“Well, my dear lady, I wanted to suggest a small start. I have a wedding party coming to Yewcreek next Saturday. Two hundred people.
