In an unusually long presentation speech, Gunnar Jahn (chairman of the Peace Prize committee from 1941 to 1966) proclaimed in December 1961 what amounted to a radical new interpretation of Nobel’s will saying, “Albert John Lutuli’s fight has been waged within the borders of his own country; but the issues raised go far beyond them. He brings a message to all who work and strive to establish respect for human rights both within nations and between nations” (www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/1960/press.html).

Three years later Chairman Jahn reasserted this recently made connection between struggles to protect human rights within a single country and international peace. While acknowledging the geographic limits of Dr. King’s work, Jahn explained, “Though Martin Luther King has not personally committed himself to the international conflict, his own struggle is a clarion call to all who work for peace.” Stressing the global significance of King’s widely publicized nonviolent campaigns for racial equality and social justice, Jahn continued:
