CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Of all the crazy moments in our druid lives thus far, Emmet being the destined warrior of prophecy is one of the craziest. It’s also one of my favs. Too often I’m the one with the cray-cray spotlight blinding me. Having this one on Emmet is fun for me.

“I am Kyna, of the Light,” the naked silver lady says, addressing all of us. “I am one of the Ladies of Light, the protectors of this great city.”

I’m still not sure what she considers a great city.

I scan the palapa Calum used for a perch and half a dozen wooden huts by the water where Dillan and Tad were fighting. Whatevs. Maybe where she comes from, this is a great city…or maybe city means something completely different in nakey Ladies of Light-landia.

“You and your people fought well today, friend,” she says to Bodhmall. “Our deepest gratitude for your intervention in aiding us.”

Bodhmall lowers her chin and bends forward in a subtle bow. “We were happy to be of aid…and happier still when the battle ended in our favor.”

When Kyna faces me, a rush of raw prana power washes me, and the butterflies in my stomach flutter wildly.

“Are you and yours all well?”

I scan the group and other than filth, blood, and a hefty dose of post-battle exhaustion, everyone seems fine. “We are well, thank you.”

“Thank the Light.” Kyna raises her hands. “It’s all right, everyone. All is well. You can come out now.”

As she addresses the vast space between us and the huts on the shore, another rush of raw power hits and I brace myself against Bruin’s round rump to keep from ass-planting on the spongy ground.

As before, the air ripples and waves before my eyes but when the distortion clears this time, four more oddly tall silver women step out of nothingness.

Then the city arrives…

I suppose it doesn’t arrive so much as reveal itself, but it takes a moment to grasp. We’re down at the water’s edge. Then rising in tiers, a bustling city of multicolored buildings climbs toward a great golden tower. It’s like those iconic images of a Greek island but with mauve, gold, seafoam, and fuchsia buildings.

“You hid the whole city?” I say, awed.

“Not me alone,” Kyna says. “Me and my sisters.”

“Kyna and her sisters are Light Weavers,” Fionn says. “I take it from yer faces ye don’t have their kind in yer time and place?”

I glance at Sloan. If anyone knows about the rare, mythological races of our time, it’s him. He shakes his head. “No. It’s believed we lost the last of them durin’ the great wars a century ago.”

“That is sad news indeed,” Kyna says. “But today is not about sadness. It’s about joy. Come, we will prepare a great meal in celebration of the day’s victory and the arrival of our warrior.”

“What about yer dead?” Fionn gestures at the fallen. “We can take care of that if ye wish.”

Kyna scans the bodies of her citizens, her expression filled with sorrow. “If you could gather our fallen and return them to the earth, we have a sacred spot near the river.
