Work by Vitali et al. (2006) found topical applications analgesic and anti-inflammatory, and internal use antidiarrheal and antimotile on gastrointestinal tissue. The aerial parts have a long tradition of use in reducing benign prostatic hyperplasia. Kiss et al. (2004) found Fireweed extracts inhibitory against angiotensin-converting enzyme, aminopeptidase N, and neutral endopeptidase (NEP), all of which play a role in prostate disease. The rhizomes contain fewer tannins, and no mucilage, but contain the flavonoids useful for the anti-inflammatory process in treating conditions such as prostatitis and enlarged prostate (Rogers 2014).
