CHAPTER FIFTEEN

JANA WISHED SHE had the power to teleport because she would have used it to get to the police station. As it was, she was moving at a snail’s pace. Marley hadn’t exactly cooperated getting into her car seat, and Bessie hadn’t been around to babysit her. That had slowed Jana down considerably and then so had the school bus that she’d gotten behind on her drive into town.

She drummed her fingers impatiently on the steering wheel when the bus made yet another stop, and she tried to stave off the worries that were flying through her head. Before she panicked, she needed the whole picture, and Jana was far from having that. So far, all she knew had come from a brief conversation and a text. The conversation had been with her mom, who’d told her that there was a rumor buzzing that Kace had punched Dominick.

Yes, punched him.

Jana just couldn’t see the unflappable Kace doing something like that, so she had practically dismissed it even when Kace hadn’t responded to her Are you okay? text. However, when she tried reaching out to Judd and asked Is Kace okay?, he’d replied with No. Jana hadn’t asked for more details. This was something best sorted out in person.

The bus finally pulled off the main road so that Jana could get around it and drive the rest of the way as fast as she safely could. There were more cars than usual in the small parking lot. More gawkers, too, on Main Street, and the gaggle of people definitely had their attention on the police station.

Thankfully, Marley had finished fussing and was now babbling cheerfully as Jana hauled her from her car seat and into the building. One step inside and she knew there was no sign of cheerfulness here. Even Ginger was looking somber and concerned.

“He’s already left,” Ginger said right off. “Your second ex-husband,” the woman clarified. “He came over here to file charges.”

While there was some snark in Ginger’s tone, Jana couldn’t fault her for that. She often found herself using a similar tone when Dominick was concerned.

Jana didn’t ask Ginger for any other details. Instead, she walked past the dispatch desk and made a beeline for Kace’s office. She could see him in there, seated at his desk, while Callen, Nico and Judd loomed around him. Jana hurried in, feeling relief when she didn’t see any signs of injury, but the relief was short-lived when she noted his expression.

Well, crap.

“Yeah, I punched Dominick when I was at Callen’s office,” Kace readily admitted.

Kace’s clearly sour mood didn’t deter Marley. “Tace!” the baby called out, and she reached for him.

Since his brothers were in the way, Marley just clung onto Callen, then Nico, then Judd, leapfrogging to get to Kace. Kace stood, took her, and Marley greeted him with a cheek kiss—which was probably sticky since she’d been eating a banana when Jana had whisked her from her high chair and to the SUV.

Marley continued with her cheery
