Chapter Three

As the clock ticked closer towards midday, the house heated under the rays of the summer sun. The cool air of the fan slowly turned warm as Eden continued decorating the miniature Christmas tree. Tiny pine cones, dusted with gold and silver glitter-glue sat on the branches and gold tinsel flickered in the fan’s breeze. Positioning the silver star at the top of the tree, Eden eased his weight to his feet and stood back to take a look at it. The LED lights reflected against the varnish off the table.

He’d been trying not to think about it, but why hadn’t his Gran been able to get hold of Chase. Maybe he was out of range. He’d been putting off turning the TV on for the same reason.

But now, he spotted the harsh, black plastic TV remote sitting in the middle of the bed and reached for it as he plopped down on its side. An orange glow filled the screen before flicking to the short haired male reporter they’d had on earlier.

“An update on Victoria’s southeast fires—a firefighter has died, and another house has been destroyed in Ballncrow after flames ravaged the small town this morning.”

Eden’s heart leapt, where was Chase? He had to be okay. He just had to be. He couldn’t be the firefighter who had died—he was the glue to Eden’s life. If Chase hadn’t taken him in, he didn’t know where he’d have ended up. Surely if something had happened, he would have heard by now. Eden leaned towards the bedside and curled his fingers around his small mobile phone. He entered a phone number and a moment later the annoying voice of an auto speaker filled his ear. “Our operator is unable to come to the phone—please hang up and try again.”

Eden groaned and hung up, proceeding to try Chase directly only for it to go to voicemail. With a sigh he lowered his phone and canceled the call. His chest weighed heavy as he stared at the phone, unsure what to do next, he needed some way to contact Chase. He began quickly flicking to the screen to write a text.

I love you

--E xx

He hit send and immediately wondered why he’d done that. It was the truth, but why say it in a text? It would have been more meaningful once Chase was home. If he gets home, the little voice in the back of Eden’s mind whispered. The thought that he may never see Chase again clutched at Eden’s chest, draining his heart until it was hollow.

Setting his phone back on the bedside table, he leaned over and grabbed his jeans. Sliding them on, he collected a box of decorations left over from the little tree, and slowly ambled down the hall into the lounge. Alongside the pinecone filled fireplace was the Christmas tree with the silver and white decorations glinting in the afternoon sun filtering through the window. A sheen of sweat thinly coated Eden’s skin the instant he stepped through the door, and he pulled his shirt over his head one-handed, somewhat relieving himself.
