Rajaji was then India’s home minister, having succeeded Sardar Patel. He would indeed retire from active public life in November 1951 but that retirement was to last just five months since he became chief minister of Madras state in April 1952. There is no evidence, however, to suggest that Nehru did, in fact, talk about Mountbatten’s suggestion with Rajaji himself.

Meanwhile, Krishna Menon protested vehemently to Nehru on 24 September 1951—that he was not sick in any way and that he would continue to be loyal to the Prime Minister personally in spite of what he called Nehru’s ‘cruel letters’. If any proof was needed of how ill Krishna Menon was, it was demonstrated by the use of these words for Nehru’s well-intentioned letters. Five days later Nehru told Mathai:

. . . I decided some months ago that Krishna must leave the High Commission. But I was not in a hurry and I wanted him to suggest . . . I saw a progressive deterioration . . . That is the only real tragedy in life and the tragedy is all the greater when it comes to a man of Krishna’s brilliance and integrity and self-sacrifice. Death or suicide are bad and painful but they do not wipe out the past. They just put a full stop to it. But inner degradation and disintegration are far worse . . .
