Chapter Twelve
Philippa sat beside Tristan in the golf cart as he reversed out of a space in the parking lot of the guesthouse, a two-story white building with green trim and a green pitched roof. At three in the afternoon on a Sunday, most of the guests had checked out at the end of brunch a half hour ago.
He sped across the lot toward the narrow-paved trail bisecting two fenced-in, grassy fields that comprised the north pasture. A breeze ruffled the ends of her hair, secured by a green headband. Her dark T-shirt and pants absorbed the rays of the sun, but the same breeze kept her cool.
A navy ball cap with the Tillbridge logo covered his short black hair and shielded Tristanâs face, which was a medium brown after hours in the sun. His blue short-sleeved Tillbridge T-shirt and slightly faded jeans had a few smudges of dirt on them, and his boots had a layer of dust. Even though he was a co-owner of the Tillbridge operation, the tall, lean former bull rider was hands-on with his job of stable manager.
He glanced at Philippa. âSorry I was late picking you up. I hadnât planned on going to this meeting. I was grooming horses when Zurie called and said I had to take her place.â
âYou didnât have to come for me. I could have driven.â Uneven pavers jostled the cart and Philippa held on to the edge of the seat.
âNo. Driving yourself there would have been a waste of gas. Besides, you can tell me about this event planner weâre meeting with. Zurie was a little too happy to take care of a leak in one of the guestrooms and pass this task to me. From her tone, Iâm guessing sheâs had enough ofâRachel. Is that her name?â
âYes, thatâs it.â
âYouâve been working with her. Is she that difficult?â
Still a tad annoyed by how Rachel had handled replacing her with Dominic but not wanting to trash her name, Philippa chose her words wisely. âLetâs just say youâre probably on-target with your guess about why Zurie wanted out of the meeting.â
He chuckled. âNoted. The planner may be a pain, but Zurieâs had nothing but good to say about Dominic and his team. I met him this morning. He came by with the location scout to talk about taping some general footage at the stable. Seems like a good man. Heâs not full of it like a few of the celebrities Iâve met while hanging with Chloe.â
Since the filming of Shadow Valley, Chloeâs notoriety had risen. Despite the pressure of fame, Tristan seemed to take it all in stride. But it hadnât been that way when the two first met. How long had it taken him to find his place in her life and career? Would she be able to do the same if she and Dominic remained together?
Philippa set the thought aside. She was getting ahead of herself. They were in new territory, as Rina had pointed out. A place where maybe they werenât meant to be a couple.
