In the dream this time, Auberon paced before the bars like a cat, his whole body strung with tension. She became aware of the cell slowly, as if she were waking from sleep instead of the other way around. She struggled to her feet as he turned toward her.

“I almost had you,” he hissed. “You slipped right through our fingers.”

She watched as he raged. Foreboding grew like a knot beneath her ribs.

“How did you know where to look?” she whispered. As if this dream might tell her the mind of the enemy.

He stopped and looked at her. His eyes narrowed. “Because you told me,” he said, as if putting something together. “I had the inkling to search the border because of a dream like this one, in which you said...”

She was afraid. “No,” she said.

He shook the bars as she shrank back. “Where are you?”

She didn’t understand. She was asleep. She was dreaming. She wasn’t within his reach, and he couldn’t read her mind anyway.

Was she going mad?

He reached for the door to the cell, but it was bound with a great chain, and he had no key. He dropped the chain with an exclamation of disgust and she breathed easier. He couldn’t touch her.

“I will find you,” he promised.

“This is a dream,” she said firmly, and then she woke.
