Chapter Eight

Hudson couldn't seem to make himself fall asleep. After Matthew had passed out, Hudson had cleaned them both up and tucked Matthew into his bed, making sure his mating mark had healed sufficiently. Now he lay there, stroking the silky strands of his mate's hair and watching him sleep.

His mate. Hudson still couldn't believe they'd finally met. When he'd turned thirty last year, Hudson had started to believe that he would never find his mate. Now, with the man tucked in beside him, Hudson had never been so scared in his life.

His bear lay in a contented doze within him, completely oblivious to the turmoil running through Hudson's head. In a matter of days, his entire life had changed. For the better, he hoped, but still changed. He had to tell his team tomorrow—there were only a couple of guys he was worried about. Everyone else, he thought, wouldn't have a problem with his being gay.

His manager was working on a press statement to release. The media was going to go nuts about this. Even though he'd told Nic earlier it wasn't a big deal, it kind of was.

Hudson wished it wasn't.

He sighed.

Matthew must had heard him, as sleepy eyes blinked up at him from under extremely long lashes. "What ya doin'?" he asked, his voice rough with sleep.

"Nothing, Matty, go back to sleep." Hudson leaned down and placed a light kiss to Matthew's lips.

Matthew hummed at the touch. "You need to sleep. You have practice in the morning." Matthew pushed him until Hudson was lying on his back and then snuggled up close, Matthew's head resting over his heart, their legs tangled together, and his arms slung over Hudson's chest.

Hudson wrapped his arm around Matthew and held him tight. This felt so right, holding Matthew in his arms. Why did everything have to be so complicated?

"Whatever it is, we'll deal with it tomorrow. Go… to… sleep." Matthew's voice trailed off by the end, letting Hudson know the man had passed out again. He liked that Matthew felt so comfortable with him already that he could do that.

Matthew was right. There wasn't anything he could do about his situation right now. And he did have practice in the morning, and if he wasn't careful he'd be playing like shit.

His teammates would forgive a lot, but not if it affected his game.

Hudson leaned down to place a kiss to the top of Matthew's head, drawing in his unique scent. He calmed almost immediately and closed his eyes, sleep finally pulling him under.
