Soon the flames from the fire became the only source of light in the house as night crept nearer, and Tod and I started to yawn. We politely declined all offers of raxi, and decided to call it a day.

I needed a bit of help to stagger upright – my legs seemed to have fixed themselves into an unnatural position for a human, and they refused all ‘walk normally’ commands. I limped over to the door.

We said goodnight to everyone and walked a couple of steps to the side of the house, where the beam from our small torch picked out the rough wooden ladder leaning against, but not attached to, the upstairs wooden balcony.

With Tod holding the ladder steady I wobbled my way to the top and clambered onto the balcony. There was only one room up there, and it was Kalyani’s. We went in.

There was a carpet on the floor! Wow! The only one in the village, and probably the only one this side of Jiri! We were impressed. How on earth had they got it up there!

There was also a wooden cabinet-type piece of furniture in the room, with Kalyani’s books in it, and a couple of chairs. Some kind soul had brought our rucksacks upstairs, and someone had put a bottle of raxi just inside the door.

Best of all, there was a bed. I limped over and sat heavily down on it.

“Oh no!” I moaned, “How could I forget that they don’t do mattresses!”

But we were tired. It had been a long and emotional day. We blew out the candles, slid gingerly onto the unwelcoming wooden slats, and tried to sleep.
