How to Remove Dead Skin—and When You Should

A bad burn kills your skin. But as you've seen every time you've gotten a scrape, skin grows back … usually. The problem with bad burns is the dead or dying tissue can get in the way of new tissue growth. It also makes it more difficult to keep the living tissue clean. So you may need to remove the dead stuff through a process called debriding.

While debriding, take it slowly and the pain will be less. The tissue you cut away shouldn’t have any feeling, but tugging on it or touching the tender living skin will cause pain.
