Zorsam awoke with a start. His limbs were cold with sweat and he sat up, panting. After a moment, he stood, took hold of his sword, and kicked Rask awake. The first touch of sun was lighting the night.

“What’s happenin’?” Rask asked, rubbing his ribs.

“We move.”

“We should eat someding—”

“Now.”

“What’s happened?”

“Come. Margruxks must die.”

CHAPTER 10: The God Who Devours

That day they crossed the wastes of Glaur in pursuit of Margruxks and his army. Zorsam moved with boundless energy born of fury. His vision drove him forward. The events seemed to him as vivid as if he had witnessed them in the flesh. He knew his people; he understood Asundi and longed for her. He pressed forward like wind through the crack, like an arrow toward the target, like the burning sun toward the horizon of its night.

Rask called for Zorsam to slow. He choked for breath and asked for a moment’s rest. The moment was too long, a veritable eternity. Zorsam growled and paced and charged forward as soon as Rask could stand straight.

He was wild, feral. He felt it and he knew it and he did not restrain it.

They came to a pass between two spires of rock. A city lay below, its long stone walls stained and cracked and shattered, its streets filled with slow streams of people. In its center rose a temple of earth and stone and extravagance. The city was red with the evening light. The day had passed in a blink. It did not matter. Zorsam trembled in body. He had reached his adversary. The army could be seen encamped outside the walls.

“What is this place?”

“De city o’ Zorah,” Rask gasped. He sat and tried to recover himself. “I hear its walls were be’tiful an’ invincible. ’Til dey came, dat is. It were one o’ de first places conquered.”

Zorsam nodded and began to descend.

“Where you’s goin’?” Rask called irritably, getting to his feet.

“To Margruxks.”

“You plans ta fight de whole army? You’s tough but you knows you’s not dat tough.”

The memory of his shame cooled his fever for a moment. “What does the Rat say?”

Rask took a few more breaths to compose himself. “A bit o’ sneakin’s called fer. Dey’s camped by de west gate. We takes de long way ’round an’ takes de norf gate. Dey never sees us come in, den we finds Margruxks and de girl.”

Zorsam scanned the army. His instincts told him to press forward, sword swinging. His mind and experience told him to listen to the little man.

“Lead the way.”

Merchants called out among the small crowd, hawking fruit, trinkets, animals, slaves. The smell of manure and sweat hung heavy in the air. Men walked wearily through the streets.

One merchant extended a foul-smelling piece of meat in front of Zorsam’s face as he passed. “Want some lizard on a stick? Good stuff. Keep you strong.”

Zorsam walked past without response. Two armored guards stood at the corner, and he approached them as Rask regretfully left the meat behind.

“Where is Margruxks?” Zorsam demanded.

“Who’s asking?”

“I am Zorsam.
