The caravan started up the mountain and Erik educated Al on the mechanics of the strap, knot and belt systems. Al learned quickly as a school student, but not today. “What’s wrong?” Erik asked.

Al said, “I feel terrible. I have a headache, I’m nauseated and I’m having trouble breathing. I don’t know if I’ll make it.”

Erik said, “Think about it. This plateau must be higher than Denver, Colorado. Are you getting altitude sickness?”

“Maybe.”

Erik thought Al ran out of inhalers weeks ago. If he’s experiencing asthma induced issues, there were no self-remedies Al could do. Erik doubted the locals had medicines to help.

“Learn these knots before we get to the top of the mountain. According to Obadiah, our lives depend on it.”

“Just let me die. It hurts too much to breathe.”

“The higher we travel, the less oxygen is available, which explains your breathing problems,” Erik said. “Do you want me to heal you or see if Obadiah has a local remedy?”

“Forget the local medicines. He’ll try bloodletting or give me a concoction made from crazy insects and plants. I’ll take my chances with death.”

Erik attempted to put his hands on Al’s head, and Al jerked away. “I’ll be all right.”

Al’s face was pale and splotchy. The thin wizard had suffered on this trip, for the food was scarce and rationed. Al’s weight loss looked extreme. His skin drew tight over his skull.

Erik wondered if Al could survive this trip. But he said, “Whatever you want is fine with me.”

Roden’s speed increased as they crested a hill, and the pine forest ended abruptly. They entered an area of shrubs, hardy cactus and creosote bushes. The flat plain spread before them. They had topped the plateau. The colors changed from the forest greens and blues to desert reds and browns. In the distance, tall jagged hills rose from the plateau, giant sentinels guarding the desert. The wind blew strong and brisk from the north.

Erik shivered and reached for the jackets.

Al vomited.
