“You got it, boss.” Ares bent his front legs while Zeus grabbed one of the spikes on the pug’s collar and swung up onto his back. He braced himself behind Ares’s helmet, parting the bristles of its brushy plume for a better view. From this vantage, he could see it all. The chase had taken Athena and Hermes through a series of hurdles. Hermes cleared the last one just inches ahead of Athena, only to land on a large platform that skidded forward on hidden wheels. When it came to an abrupt halt, Hermes flung herself off and continued forward at top speed.

“Nice dismount, Hermes!” Ares yelled.

“What in blazes is all that junk they’re running through?” Zeus asked.

“Callie built that stuff for me,” Ares answered proudly. “She calls it my doggy obstacle course, so I can stay a strong god of war.” He flexed his chest. “It’s like the best thing ever!”

“No wonder you like Callie so much,” Zeus muttered.

“Obstacle course?” Poseidon asked from the ground next to them. The pufferfish was swimming as high in his dive helmet as he could, his face pressed against its clear surface. He held his fins like binoculars in front of his oversize eyes. “I can’t see a thing.”

“I’ll give you a boost, too!” Ares grabbed Poseidon’s helmet by its lifeline and lifted his head, jerking the helmet six inches into the air.

“Whoooa! Easy!” Poseidon righted himself in the churning water as his helmet hung upside down from Ares’s wrinkly mouth. Drips of slobber rained on the clear surface. “Hey, mind the drool!”

“Thorry,” Ares said around the mouthful of lifeline.

“I need a boost, too,” Demeter said. She hopped up next to Zeus and watched the action, transfixed, as she nibbled on her lettuce sash.

The Olympians all saw that the chase wouldn’t last for long. Hermes had headed for a dead end. She had nowhere to run except across the final obstacle, a narrow board supported at its middle by a rocky mound. “The teeter-totter!” Ares managed to mumble around Poseidon’s lifeline. “Oh, that ith thuch a fun one!”

Hermes hopped on the tip of the narrow board and turned to face Athena. The cat dug her claws into the ground and came to a halt. The two animals eyed each other. Athena knew she had Hermes now. Hermes had no place to go but up the narrow board, to the high side of the teeter-totter.

The hen risked a glance up and saw the shadows of sunset had nearly consumed the enchanted apple tree. A cool breeze rippled through its gloomy lower branches. Only the golden apple at its very top and the Hesperides just below it were ablaze in the last rays of sunlight. In less than a minute, they, too, would disappear.

All three Hesperides were watching the action with their odd jet-black eyes.

“Our day soon comes to an end,” called the leader.

“Not unlike a certain hen,” added the second.

“Never to be seen again!” the third figure shouted triumphantly.

After a brief pause, the other Hesperides threw back their heads and cheered.
