Chapter Nineteen

Tom left Enna behind as he made his way back to Madam Rose’s store. She had some things to sort out before they left on another extended journey, so she also agreed to join him the next day at sunrise.

But before that, he had a few things he wanted to check out.

“Welcome, dear customer.” Madam Rose motioned for him to approach as he stepped into her establishment. As usual, the place was empty, a fact that should have made it unprofitable as a business, but he guessed the few buyers she did coax in paid more than enough to keep it afloat.

That, or she had other money, either her own or from an external backer.

“I wanted to thank you again for this armor. It turned out to be perfect for me.” Tom raised a knuckle and wrapped it on his metal chest plate. After his battle with the Ancient Vampire, a hint of a chill had vanished as his body adapted to the suit's bizarre effects.

“I know. Krieg dropped by and showed me the images of your duel, despite my insistence that I would wait for your return. Congratulations.”

Tom’s burgeoning happiness deflated noticeably at the mention of his Guide. Again, Krieg had stuck his nose in where it wasn’t welcome, but at least his laissez-faire attitude toward his secrets had helped Tom to skip past a potentially long-winded explanation.

“I’ve brought two people onto my team. One is the Moon Elf I told you about, but the other is someone you’ve likely heard of before.”

“Yes. The Red Prince.”

“You know, you could just pretend that you don’t know everything.” Tom let out an exaggerated sigh as he dropped his shoulders. “Never mind. I wanted to ask if you had anything that could help them out.”

“They may be your allies for the moment, but eventually you may regret assisting them. Are you sure of this decision?”

“Yes, I am.”

“So sure of yourself. I, for one, respect your confidence and honorable mindset.” Madam Rose clicked her fingers, a move that summoned two of her employees from the backroom in an instant. “I have prepared these two sets, please let me know if they meet your expectations, dear customer.”

Tom didn’t question how she’d known what he would ask for so far in advance as he leaned in to inspect the items. A pair of bracelets and an amulet, both brimming with power, yet each one the complete opposite of the other.

Cold and hot, white and black. His skin buzzed as he brushed his fingertips over the bracelet only for his other to pinch and twitch as he gripped the jeweled necklace.

“I imagine they're best suited to compliment the wearer's abilities, am I right?” Tom caught sight of a subtle smirk on Madam Rose’s face, but the expression vanished before he could turn to get a good look. “But which one is for who?”

“Perhaps you could make a guess, dear customer?”

A test, again, yet at least Madam Rose’s wasn’t potentially deadly or annoying, or both. Tom held the pair, one in each hand, as he considered his instinctual response.
