I just decided to ignore the Mount Calvary dig. And it was a dig. I just knew it was. Nurse Bloom didnât seem to say anything that didnât have a point to it. And her comments always seemed to be motivated by what I had just been thinking. It was unnerving.
I made a mental note to ask Mother if Nurse Bloom was some kind of spiritualist or mind-reader or something.
I changed my plans right quick and turned sharply at the next intersection to avoid driving directly by the church.
âI was just thinking, Nurse Bloom, since weâre over on this side of the river, I have one really lovely place to show you in a wonderful community called The Woods.
âItâs not very far from here. Past Pleasant Hill. Not far from where my mother lives, in fact.â
âIs that where your house is?â she asked.
âOh, no, I donât have a house. I live in a condominium, but very upscale. Very high-class. De rigueur. I decorated it myself. Itâs out by Lake Peak on the edge of town. You might even want to look at a condo there that I know is available.â
âJust let me take a look at your place,â she said.
âMy place? Oh, gosh, maybe on some other day. Not today! Today is kind of a mess, and so is my place. Itâs not usually like that. Because, even though Iâm a single working mother, I pride myself on keeping a clean and neat house. But itâs just today. Thereâs so much going on with LaShawndra and her mess. And I had to get up unusually early for your âappointment.ââ
She just looked at me.
âWould you like some music?â I asked, trying to distract her.
Can you believe that old woman actually smacked my hand away from the stereo switch!?
âNo,â she said.
Damn, I thought, that means Iâll have to talk.
âItâs a good thing my daughter, LaShawndra, isnât riding with us this morning. She wonât ride in any vehicle unless thereâs music playing.â
No matter how hard I tried to push her out of my thoughts, all that seemed to be on my mind that morning was LaShawndra, my little hoochie-mama daughter.
âSo weâre headed for your place now?â Nurse Bloom just persisted.
âOh, no, Nurse Bloom, I live on the other side of the river,â I explained.
âWell, letâs head over there, then.â
âOh, Nurse Bloom, I was in such a hurry to get here to you this morning, I left my home in kind of a mess,â I tried to explain. I had the vents open, but it was getting hot in the car, at least to me. Maybe it was just the heat Nurse Bloom was putting on me to go to my home. I turned the AC on medium. I figured she might be a bit uncomfortable in the spring heat with that light wool cape over her crisp white uniform. I felt all wilted, but she looked as fresh and crisp as a new dollar bill. I guess she just commanded her body not to sweat.
