Even though I know you may be reading this book because you want to be inspired with ways to save money to give your family more financial margin, I am not going to tell you to stop eating out, going on date nights, and taking your family on vacations.

Why?

Feeling restricted from doing something often sets people up for failure. One of my friends put it best when she said, “Be disciplined without being legalistic.” Let’s take eating out, for example. Discipline will allow you to give yourself a certain number of nights per month to eat out; legalism will say you can’t eat out at all. Budgeting to enjoy a meal at a restaurant will give you something to look forward to, and it will also help you say yes to eating at home when you know you will be dining out soon.

Whether it be eating out, going on a date with your spouse, enjoying a family day with your kids, or taking a vacation, you don’t have to spend a fortune. There are ways to enjoy these while spending less money in the process. We’ll explore how in this chapter.
