What Is Our Responsibility?

Letting our children make decisions, particularly ones that may harm them, feels counterintuitive, doesn’t it? Our job is not to prevent pain, though deep down, that’s what we’d prefer. As adults, we’ve already experienced our share of pain and heartache. Because we love our children so much, we want them to be spared.

Unfortunately, life doesn’t work that way. We don’t help our children when we eradicate pain. If that is our goal in parenting—to remove or prevent pain—we are setting our parenting goals far too low. Pain can actually be a good thing when viewed in terms of eternity and God’s redemptive hand.

Take a quick inventory of your own spiritual life. When have you grown the most? When have you felt closest to Jesus? When things were peachy? Or when life threw trials your way? When our children experience pain, particularly when their choices have brought on that pain, they are better off if we don’t rescue them. Remind yourself that the current pain is actually an amazing opportunity for growth in your child. If you control or step in, your child will miss out on important character-shaping opportunities.
