KIRKBY FLEETHAM

Once two distinct villages, Kirkby Fleetham is pleasantly situated approximately 5 miles west of Northallerton. The motte and bailey fortress once stood on a natural rise in a low-lying area to the south of the village and is attributed to Henry le Scrope, who bought the manor at Fleetham in 1301. At some point after his death in 1336 the family abandoned the site as their principal residence and later in the century Henry’s son Richard, 1st Lord Scrope of Bolton built the magnificent stone edifice at Castle Bolton near Wensleydale. The family held land in Fleetham until 1628 and it was through this line that the manor eventually passed to Lord Fauconberg and the Darcy family.

Kirkby’s name is derived from the Old Norse for ‘village with a church’. After the Norman Conquest the land belonged to Count Alan of Brittany, but after 1086 it was granted to Odo, chamberlain to the Earl of Richmond. Gospatrick, son of Aldred (Eldred), held Kirkby manor and was succeeded by his daughter Godareda. From this point the succession is uncertain until William Giffard emerged in the thirteenth century. He was succeeded by the Stapleton and Metham families in that order. The two manors were finally united in 1670 when the title of Fleetham was conveyed to Richard Smelt, a younger brother of the lord of Kirkby. In 1740 the Aislabie family and subsequently the Courage family succeeded to the title.
