Chapter Nineteen

‘Okay, so let me get this straight,’ Aunt Claudine ran her fingers through her hair, ‘After your crazy ex-girlfriend—’

‘That’s a sexist term!’ Aunt Meg countered.

‘Honey, she chased them down and had a bunch of goons beat the living daylights out of him …’

‘The situation’s a whole lot more nuanced than that—’

‘Hush!’ Gran shouted, raising her hands. ‘Both of you!’

As the room descended into silence, Gran sighed and turned to Vir. ‘So, what was her name again?’

‘Aishwarya,’ I answered before Vir could reply. I wanted to say ‘Fucking Aishwarya’, but I didn’t think Gran was in the mood for it.

‘Yes, thank you,’ she said to me before turning back to Vir. ‘So, after Aishwarya left the two of you to rot, you don’t remember how you both arrived at our doorstep?’

‘I know it sounds crazy,’ said Vir. He was sipping a tea with ginger, peppermint, lemongrass and honey, but what he didn’t know was that it was no ordinary tea. It was Aunt Meg’s special ‘truth serum’. ‘But a strange white light hit us and … I don’t know… teleported us here?’

‘White light?’ Gran arched a quizzical brow.

‘Yeah! I don’t know how to explain it. It was just so surreal.’

‘That explains how they got in despite the gate being locked,’ Aunt Meg refreshed everyone else’s cups with lavender tea.

‘It’s true,’ I said. I don’t know why I wanted to rush to Vir’s defence, as everything he said would be believed anyway because of the truth serum. ‘I saw it all through my soul-self. We were just surrounded by white light, and next thing we knew, we were by our doorstep.’

Gran remained silent as Vir continued, ‘I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have gotten you all mixed up in my mess.’

‘Well, too late for that!’ Aunt Claudine tied up her auburn hair in a loose top knot.

‘But why would she go so far as to try and kill you?’ asked Aunt Meg. ‘I get “hell hath no fury as a woman scorned” and all other sexist literary tropes, but I severely doubt most would go to such extremes to avenge a broken heart.’

‘It’s not to avenge a broken heart,’ Vir replied. His cup was almost empty. ‘It was to remind me of my duty.’

‘Your duty?’ Gran asked even as she gestured to Aunt Meg to give him more enchanted tea.

Vir sighed, ‘It’s a long and really complicated story.’ He thanked Aunt Meg with a gentle smile as she refilled his cup. ‘I don’t even know where to begin.’

‘Well, the beginning is always a good place to start,’ Gran said after Vir took a sip. ‘Go on, tell us!’

‘Do you know of the Cabal?’

Upon being greeted with a collective silence, Vir continued, ‘My family belongs to a clandestine fellowship that traces its origins to before history even began being recorded. It is called the Cabal. Aishwarya’s family is also a part of it. Some say that the Cabal existed even when Atlantis floated upon the ocean, and that it led to its eventual sinking. Families that are a part of it are born to lead and control the world.
