Chapter Nineteen
âOkay, so let me get this straight,â Aunt Claudine ran her fingers through her hair, âAfter your crazy ex-girlfriendââ
âThatâs a sexist term!â Aunt Meg countered.
âHoney, she chased them down and had a bunch of goons beat the living daylights out of him â¦â
âThe situationâs a whole lot more nuanced than thatââ
âHush!â Gran shouted, raising her hands. âBoth of you!â
As the room descended into silence, Gran sighed and turned to Vir. âSo, what was her name again?â
âAishwarya,â I answered before Vir could reply. I wanted to say âFucking Aishwaryaâ, but I didnât think Gran was in the mood for it.
âYes, thank you,â she said to me before turning back to Vir. âSo, after Aishwarya left the two of you to rot, you donât remember how you both arrived at our doorstep?â
âI know it sounds crazy,â said Vir. He was sipping a tea with ginger, peppermint, lemongrass and honey, but what he didnât know was that it was no ordinary tea. It was Aunt Megâs special âtruth serumâ. âBut a strange white light hit us and ⦠I donât know⦠teleported us here?â
âWhite light?â Gran arched a quizzical brow.
âYeah! I donât know how to explain it. It was just so surreal.â
âThat explains how they got in despite the gate being locked,â Aunt Meg refreshed everyone elseâs cups with lavender tea.
âItâs true,â I said. I donât know why I wanted to rush to Virâs defence, as everything he said would be believed anyway because of the truth serum. âI saw it all through my soul-self. We were just surrounded by white light, and next thing we knew, we were by our doorstep.â
Gran remained silent as Vir continued, âIâm sorry, I shouldnât have gotten you all mixed up in my mess.â
âWell, too late for that!â Aunt Claudine tied up her auburn hair in a loose top knot.
âBut why would she go so far as to try and kill you?â asked Aunt Meg. âI get âhell hath no fury as a woman scornedâ and all other sexist literary tropes, but I severely doubt most would go to such extremes to avenge a broken heart.â
âItâs not to avenge a broken heart,â Vir replied. His cup was almost empty. âIt was to remind me of my duty.â
âYour duty?â Gran asked even as she gestured to Aunt Meg to give him more enchanted tea.
Vir sighed, âItâs a long and really complicated story.â He thanked Aunt Meg with a gentle smile as she refilled his cup. âI donât even know where to begin.â
âWell, the beginning is always a good place to start,â Gran said after Vir took a sip. âGo on, tell us!â
âDo you know of the Cabal?â
Upon being greeted with a collective silence, Vir continued, âMy family belongs to a clandestine fellowship that traces its origins to before history even began being recorded. It is called the Cabal. Aishwaryaâs family is also a part of it. Some say that the Cabal existed even when Atlantis floated upon the ocean, and that it led to its eventual sinking. Families that are a part of it are born to lead and control the world.
