CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Idina had fully expected their debriefing back on Riot to be full of tension, disappointment, and all the unknowns Hellion still hadn’t pinned down about the changes in magic—for mobs and now Hellion operators. She hadn’t expected to see Richard in attendance. For the first time in at least a month, maybe longer, her uncle stood at the head of the table with two officers Idina also hadn’t expected to see for an internal debriefing. Today, that happened to be General McTaggart and Colonel Marsden.

Richard had already received confirmation of Bravo’s latest successful mission before Idina and her team had left the ground in Georgia, but the ranking officials in the room didn’t look remotely happy about it.

Probably because they had no idea what to expect, and whatever Bravo Team was about to tell them wasn’t going to make it any better.

Once the entire team had entered the meeting room and filtered around the long table to stand behind the available chairs, McTaggart sniffed and looked down at the table before muttering, “Take a seat.”

Everyone did as instructed, and Richard was the only one with a smile.

He still hasn’t gotten much sleep, has he? He looks like crap.

Marsden cleared his throat and gestured at Richard sitting beside him. “Colonel MacBlair requested that we put aside other pressing work to join him today in light of recent developments. I presume your debriefing is part of that.”

Richard’s closed-lipped smile grew wider to reveal a flash of his teeth. “It’s good to see you again, Bravo. Been a while.”

“You too, sir.” Briggs nodded at him, keeping his composure well enough despite looking like he wanted to leap to his feet and run out of the room before the debriefing began.

Idina couldn’t blame him.

“So.” Richard folded his hands on the table and looked from one operator’s face to the next. “Another kill in the bag, but no sample. What happened?”

General McTaggart fixed the colonel with wide eyes and tilted his head. “That’s what you’re worried about, Colonel?”

“It is a little concerning, don’t you think?”

“That’s not priority number one here.”

“Not even priority number ten,” Marsden muttered as he shook his head.

“It’s still a priority, General,” Richard replied. “They’re all tied together, as I’m sure you’re aware. You didn’t seem all that concerned about getting the ball rolling for my command’s debriefing, so I’m merely throwing out questions. If there’s something else on your mind—”

“So many things,” McTaggart curtly replied. “My main concern at this point is finding out why one of your operators returned from this mission completely incapacitated—”

Richard snorted. “He’s only unconscious.”

“By what you called some interesting developments with wider-spread effects than you or we guessed,” McTaggart continued, ignoring the colonel’s attempts to argue semantics. “Let’s start with that.”

The tension in the room rose considerably when Bravo Team realized they would have to explain more about what had happened to Wilson than any of them understood. Idina eyed her other unit members. They all looked hesitant to say anything. Whatever they offered wouldn’t be nearly enough.
