CHAPTER 9

Kirby raised her finger to her lips. “Relax. Break off a leaf and pretend to eat it.” She sat cross-legged on the ground and tried to keep from laughing.

Wyatt had looked terrified on the prop plane. But now that a four-hundred-pound gorilla had plopped down next to him and sniffed his shoulder, he looked as though he might crap his pants. “Not sure how that’s going to save me from being mauled to death,” he whispered, bringing a leaf to his lips.

Izzy was one of the more trusting and friendly gorillas. She enjoyed human contact. So did her young babies, who rolled around playfully at Wyatt’s feet.

Tav, the group’s silverback, took his position higher up on the ridge, watching Wyatt. A sadness filled Tav’s gaze. Gorillas were fiercely loyal and protective of their own. Like humans, their communities were tightly woven, and they would fight to the death to protect them. Tav wore two new battle scars to prove his bravery.

Pain and sorrow filled Kirby’s soul. She’d failed to keep Tav’s family safe. Deep down she knew she couldn’t have prevented the massacre. If she’d been on-site, she most likely would have been dead, or fighting for her life like Ben.

Her poor assistant.

Tav suddenly jumped to his hind legs on high alert.

“Stay low,” Kirby commanded.

All the gorillas scurried, taking off up the ridge. Tav made a defensive move before running down the hill, stopping two feet from where she and Wyatt were sitting. He grunted, pounding his chest, shaking his head.

“What’s he doing?” Wyatt whispered.

“I’m not sure,” Kirby admitted. “Don’t move.”

Tav pounded his fist into the ground, then raised it as if to signal toward the west. He narrowed his eyes and lowered his head, grunting.

“What’s wrong, my old friend?” she asked as if Tav could answer. She’d developed a relationship with the silverback that had been unprecedented. There was a level of trust that no other human had ever developed with such a male, with one or two exceptions. Tav had allowed her to get incredibly close to him and his family. He treated her as one of his own.

The silverback jerked his head, raised up, pounded his chest, and made what she called the charging noise, which no man ever wanted to hear. She’d been charged before and it was about the scariest thing she’d ever faced in her entire life.

Tav turned and ran up the ridge.

“What the fuck?” Wyatt inched closer. “Was he trying to tell you something?”

“I honestly don’t know.” She twisted her braid over her shoulder and let out a long breath. “I’ve never seen him behave in quite that manner. His actions indicated he would charge, but we posed no threat and he knew that, so it makes no sense.”

Wyatt reached into his backpack and pulled out his weapon, resting it on his lap. “I know shit about animals, but Hunter works with dogs, and they are good at warning people. Could Tav know something we don’t?”

She glanced over her shoulder and shivered. They were thirty minutes from the campgrounds.
