Chapter ten

THE pay phone on the corner near the park didn’t work, so I drove another block and used one outside a convenience store. I almost missed the thing because it was covered in dead kudzu and honeysuckle vines, not to mention it was tucked into the back alley between the store and a carwash. I don’t think the carwash worked. Not with the thick curtain of cobwebs and bounty of wasp nests growing along the ceiling.

With the quarter I’d dug out of the cup holder, I fed the phone box and dialed the number scribbled on the piece of paper Jericho had left sitting on my clothes.

Clothes he’d folded and neatly stacked, for some messed-up reason.

The phone rang. By the fifth jingle I’d almost convinced myself to hang up, only my hand wasn’t listening. No matter how hard I willed it to let go of the receiver, it wouldn’t. I think it was in cahoots with my dick, which had been straining in my pants ever since I’d set out to make the call. The wind kicked up, and I huddled against the phone booth, trying to protect myself from the worst of the chill.

The line picked up, and a voice I didn’t recognize spoke. “Hello?”

Shit. Now what did I say? “I need to speak with Jericho.” There: simple, straightforward. Somehow I managed to not sound as desperate and strung out as I felt.

The line went quiet, but it wasn’t dead, because I could hear shuffling, talking, and then the words got closer to the receiver.

A voice I knew gave me a sleepy “Hello.” I guess my ears were attached to my dick too, because just that one word made my cock punch against my jeans and my balls get tight. I tried to rearrange everything, but touching myself only made things worse, so I quit.

I said, “I need to see you.”

Jericho hummed. Or maybe he was just thinking. “Where are you?”

“A convenience store half a mile north of the loading docks.”

“Do you remember how to get to the motel?”

I did. I don’t think I could ever forget. Even if I wanted to. “Sure.”

“I’ll be there in five.”

The line went dead, and I cursed because I’d forgotten to ask him what room.

From the east, the big concrete clown faced the street. Pigeon shit coated its face in heavy white streaks, giving it a half-melted look. As if the place wasn’t creepy enough without the special effects. I’m sure my subconscious filed the little bit of nightmare fodder where it could access it later.

I wound up not needing the room number. Jericho stood outside the same room we’d used the night before. He had a shirt on this time. It was nice to know all the shivering I did was for a reason. I checked the airflow from the vents one more time before I cut the engine off. It was blowing strong and warm, but it did nothing to combat the icebox sensation that had taken residence in my chest.
