Chapter Twenty

Harry entered the kitchen with a duffel bag over his shoulder. Granville and Chamberlain sat at the island drinking wine. In idler moments Harry had wondered how many bottles they got through each week, and what their bill might be per month.

He placed the bag roughly down in a gap on the island and barked out, “Binoculars?”

Granville and Chamberlain looked at each other. “You were the one with a fledgling interest in birdwatching,” Chamberlain drawled. “Or so you professed.”

“That was many years ago, George.”

“Surely you’ve still got your old pair. They certainly cost you enough.”

“They were priced quite reasonably for the quality,” Granville sniffed. “I’ll see if I can dig them out.”

He left the kitchen and headed upstairs. Chamberlain ran a critical eye over Harry’s outfit. “They say black is slimming, I suppose, but you can have too much of a good thing, dear.”

“I’m not too bothered about my appearance tonight, believe it or not.”

“That would imply that you are interested sometimes, but I must say that I’m yet to see any evidence-”

Harry took a gun from the bag and placed it heavily on the hard surface.

“Oh my,” Chamberlain said, leaning backwards a few inches on his stool. “Wherever did you come across such a thing?”

“The night I rescued Cavill. Thought I was rescuing her, at least.”

“And you’ve had this in the house ever since?”

“I’ve been letting the kids in the park play with it too, from time to time. When they’ve asked nicely.”

“Most amusing. My point, old boy, is-”

“I’m here to protect Rupert,” Harry said, taking the pistol swiftly apart to check one final time that everything was in perfect working order. “And, to a lesser extent, you. Having a gun handy can help with those sorts of things.”

“Actually, from a statistical perspective, there’s some debate as to whether-”

“Not in my experience, there isn’t.”

Harry emptied the magazine onto the island. Chamberlain peered down, holding the seemingly-forgotten glass of wine suspended by its stem. “And these are the… bullets, I suppose?”

“You’re quite an expert.”

Footsteps sounded on the stairs then Granville reappeared at the door. “Voila,” he said, and swept up to Harry holding a small leather case aloft. Harry took it from him, removed the binoculars and their lens caps, and tried them out.

“They’ll do.”

“That’s it?”

“You’ve proved yourself to be an integral part of this operation,” Harry said, as he put the binoculars away and placed the case in his bag. “Without this contribution, I’d have been a dead man walking. Now, thanks to you-”

“I think he might be humouring you, dear,” Chamberlain said, voice echoing in his wine glass as he went to take a sip.

Harry put the pistol away last of all, Granville and Chamberlain both eyeing it uneasily as he did, and zipped up the bag. He took his phone from his pocket and opened a map then scrolled northwest towards the Cotswolds.

“Can we get you anything else?” Granville asked.

“A sniper rifle would help.”

“Ah,” Chamberlain sucked in his cheeks. “I’m afraid we gifted ours to a friend.
