Liberation Christologies

Liberation theologies originated in social movements in Latin America where theologians reflected on socioeconomic and political concerns. In his classic work, A Theology of Liberation, Gustavo Gutierrez sees salvation as liberation: from economic and political oppression, from dehumanization, and from sin (both personal and structural).9 In other parts of the world, liberation theology addresses other situations of oppression and exclusion, for example, feminist theologians denounce sexism and patriarchy, black theologians target racism, Korean Minjung theologians fight for political inclusion, and Indian Dalit theologians oppose caste.

Liberation Christologies focus on the words and deeds of Jesus as reported in the Synoptic Gospels. Jesus is seen as the advocate for the voiceless, the friend of the socially marginalized, the healer and reconciler, champion of equality and social justice. Jesus as the liberator ushers in the Reign of God—a new reality and social order—with fulfillment taking place in history and in the eschatological future.
