“I’ll pick it up the weekend before Thanksgiving, if that’s okay with you.”

“Does three o’clock on Saturday work?” the salesclerk asked as she checked her book.

“Perfect,” I replied, pulling the manila envelope Summer had given me out of my Louis Vuitton bag. I’d practically had to pry it from her fingers. She’d been clutching the envelope so hard they’d been turning red.

I turned it over in my hand and opened the seal, then eased the pages out far enough so I could read the results.

Fetal Sex … male.

I felt my cold little heart start to thaw a bit at the knowledge that Summer and Noah would be having a little boy.

Summer is going to be so excited.

I pushed the paper back down into the envelope, closed the clasp, and handed it to the clerk behind the display.

“Thanks,” I said, before turning to leave.

Gender reveal cake ordered … check. Now I was off to the party planner to talk about everything else except the food, which Whitney and Luca’s mom were taking the reins on. November was going by quickly, in a haze of great sex, good conversation, and more Netflix and Chill than I’d ever thought possible.

And I’d been loving every second.

Aiden was more than a hot body with a pretty face. A sense of humor with a wicked chess strategy. A loving father with a penchant for making me feel like the sexiest being on the planet. He was all of that and more, and with each passing day I found my thoughts wandering his way at the most inopportune times.

And I was trying very hard to not think about what it all meant.

I’d finished the two-block walk, which put me smack dab in the middle of the florist where I’d ordered the balloons and my office.

This was why I loved living and working in the city. I didn’t have to go far to find anything and everything I needed. And the fact that I could walk there if I so desired was an added bonus.

It was my favorite time of year … brisk, but not freezing. Cool enough so I could show off my fabulous new camel-colored cashmere jacket and matching boots, but not so cold I needed a scarf, hat, or gloves.

“Ms. Farris, so lovely to see you again,” Staci, the party planner, said as I walked in the door. She was standing next to her receptionist’s desk, which I knew was no coincidence. We had an appointment, and Staci liked to be up front to welcome her top clients herself.

It was one of the reasons I kept coming back.

“Hi, Staci, how are you?”

We air kissed each other’s cheeks as her receptionist asked, “Can I get you a refreshment? Hot chocolate, Irish Coffee, a glass of wine?”

“Just water. Perrier,” I replied.

Twenty minutes later I was on my way. The theme was Thanksgiving chic, Staci had my father’s contact information for the open bar, and the venue was confirmed.

Not bad for a lunch hour.

I turned my heeled boots back toward my office building and took out my phone.
