The Word of Power

Jesus, the greatest spiritual genius of all time, said that our prayers should be prayers of faith; our meditations, contemplations of certainty. Our faith must reach beyond facts to that something which makes facts out of its own affirmation, creates form out of its own substance, and projects experience through the law of its own word.

He translated the universe in terms of mind and spirit. Man is one with the Spirit and one with the universal law of cause and effect. All things are possible to God, who creates through the power of His own divine imagination. The Divine Nature circulates through man, else he would have no life. Man’s word is creative, not because he wills or wishes it, but because this is the nature of his being.

Our impulse to create comes from the original creative Spirit which is in, around and through us. The urge to live creatively comes from the urge of the Divine Imagination which pushes Itself out through us into self-expression. This is man’s nature. He neither made it nor can he change it. He is compelled to live under its law.

There is a unifying and coordinating will in the universe whose nature is love and goodness. Therefore, Jesus carefully showed that when our thoughts are contrary to this divine goodness they must ultimately bring so much discomfort that we shall gladly renounce them for the pearl of great price, the unity of good. Using our thought constructively, thinking the thoughts of God after Him, we recreate our individual world more nearly after the divine pattern that the Spirit has already implanted within us.

Jesus, walking with the multitude, diffused a healing power which touched people into wholeness by its divine presence. His command stilled the wind and wave. His knowledge of spiritual law fed the thousands. His consciousness of peace calmed the troubled mind. His love was a healing balm to the sick. He possessed a transcendent power. He consciously brought this power to bear upon his environment. He told his followers that what he was doing they could do if they believed they could. The whole mystery and meaning of the teaching of Jesus is bound up in this word believe.

He so often talked about the more abundant life, the greater happiness, the deeper peace. He must have experienced uncertainty, but unlike most of us, he triumphed. He walked over the waters of doubt, the waves of confusion and the tempests of unbelief. He was a happy and radiant soul. He was triumphant. His inward ear was in tune with the divine harmony; his inward eye looked upon a spiritual universe; his human consciousness was transmuted into divine understanding as he sought for and found unity with life.

He said very little about the negative conditions he wished to change. He took an opposite position. Instead of telling God how sick and poor people were, how famished and lonely they were, he affirmed the opposite. He told the lame to walk, the blind to see, the dumb to speak and the deaf to hear.
