"Are you sure he's going to be okay, Grandma Sonya?" I asked for what felt like the thousandth time.

I couldn't do anything else, which made me feel just as helpless as I did watching Kai take on Pierce by himself. Every instinct I had pushed me to run to him; to help him, to save him, but I didn't. I was torn between my duties to my pack and my duty to my twin. Joaquin was the only thing that kept me glued to where I stood as I watched my alpha rip my brother to pieces. I thought I was going to lose him. I almost did, but Rosie got to him before the reaper did.

She saved him. She did what I was too hesitant to do. I was a fucking coward. I didn't have to guts to go against pack laws, and in doing so, it almost costed my brother's life. I owed her everything, and I owed Kai an apology even though it didn't feel enough. Here I sat in a chair next to Kai, who was asleep on the couch. Both my hands tightly gripping his as if doing so would ensure he wouldn't leave me. I would do better by him, I'd make sure of that.

"Kai will be just fine, dear. He just needs his rest," Grandma Sonya assured me as she placed a gentle hand on my shoulder.

I closed my eyes and took in her comforting gesture. It helped ease some of the guilt I felt, but not by much. At least Kai would be okay. My eyes burned as I looked up to Rosie who had her arms crossed and was looking down at Kai with a hardened expression. Her dark hair was pulled into a ponytail. I took in her slim frame, the curves of her hips, and toned legs. It wasn't hard to see why Kai was crushing hard on her. Rosie was gorgeous. She was witty, talented, strong and protective of those she cared about.

Even I felt something for her, though I'd never admit it to anybody. I would never do that to Kai. He struggled to find a girl for himself for so long, and it looked like Rosie returned his feelings towards him. He deserved to have a good woman at his side. To Hell with Alpha Pierce's claim.

Rosie's eyes moved to meet mine, and I gave her a somber smile.

"Thank you for saving him," I got out, my voice cracking slightly.

Rosie shrugged nonchalantly. "It was nothing."

"No it wasn't, dear. That was a brave thing you did. I'm very proud of you," Grandma Sonya interjected, reaching out to cup Rosie's face and gently kissed the top of her head.

"It's also a stupid thing for you to do," Joaquin barked out, stopping his pace near the hall between the stairs and the front door to face us with a scowl.

Rosie dropped her arms and huffed out a breath in frustration. "What, you wanted me to let him die?"

"You don't realize what you've done, Rosie! This is bad, not only for yourself but for Kai as well.
