Twenty

As soon as I was sure that Vakchos was going to stay put, I asked Chet to go check on the O’Shaughnessys and fetch the first aid kit. We needed to get Maggot’s gash cleaned up and bandaged. I also wanted to make sure our guests didn’t come wandering in while Ox and Pandora were in the middle of making Fang Boy spill his guts. They’d been through enough drama since meeting us, and I didn’t want them having to deal with anymore if it could be avoided. Not to mention their prior experience with vampires.

After a bit of posturing and chest puffery, Vakchos finally gave in and started talking. Even when he wasn’t trying to be terrifying, his tone was smug and condescending.

“As I explained to your scrawny friend, I am not here to kill you, or collect the sizable and justified bounty on your head, Pandora. I’m here to help you.”

“In case you didn’t get the memo, I’ve done just fine without you and your kind for the last two years. I don’t need your help.”

Vakchos’s lips curled into a chilling sneer. “Actually, my pet, you very definitely need my help. You just haven’t realized it yet.”

Ox slammed a fist into the table in front of Vakchos and bellowed, “Quit playing games and get to the damn point already.”

Vakchos gave Ox a look that would have gotten a chair busted across his head if we’d encountered him in a bar. Fortunately, for him it only earned him a slap in the back of the head from Pandora.

“Did you just strike me?”

Pandora snorted. “Just be glad I didn’t slit your arrogant throat.”

The vampire grasped the collar of his shirt and pulled it down, exposing a gruesome scar the encircled most of his neck.

“As I recall, you’ve already tried that once and failed miserably, which brings us back to why I’m here.”

I saw Pandora bristle then suddenly it was like the flood gates guarding her emotions had been thrown open. Rage, fear, blood, and carnage exploded into my mind with a force so strong it made my ears ring and gave me tunnel vision. I grunted and pressed my palms against the side of my head.

“Pandora, do you think you can dial it down a notch or two? You’re killing me.”

I heard her draw a quick breath in through her nose and everything shut off just as quickly as it had come. I opened my eyes and blinked a few times as the light assaulted my slowly returning vision. I felt a hand on my back and heard Ox asking me if I was okay. I nodded, but the simple act of moving my head almost made me toss my tacos.

Ox asked Benny to get me some water, but I didn’t think we should waste any more time so I forced my eyes open and smiled. “I’m fine, really. Let’s get back to our discussion.”

Vakchos’s face contorted in another disdainful sneer. “I see that you’re a much better empath than you are a spell slinger.
