It appeared that there was a live feed coming from what looked like the interior of a church. There was a figure striding around and the camera followed him, but he was always in shadow and his features couldn’t be seen. Apart from his hair. Long and corkscrewed, it flew around the man’s head as he spoke. Alex couldn’t see what colour his hair was as the feed was in black and white. Strange. But Alex figured it was done to maintain anonymity.

‘Comrades. I’m sorry I’m not able to be with you in person tonight, but I have urgent business here in London, which is why I’m speaking to you from our headquarters.’

‘Heil Odin, Heil Odin,’ rang around the hall and every man and woman held out their right arm, fist clenched.

Crooks was jostled as people realised he wasn’t joining in, so rather self-consciously, he raised his fist as well.

On the screen, Odin held up his hands and waited for the adoring chants to fade.

‘My message to you tonight is one about corruption. Contrary to popular belief, corruption is not specific to poor, developing, or transitional countries. In western countries cases of bribery and other forms of corruption in all possible fields, exists.

‘They can take many forms. Under-the-table payments made to reputed surgeons by patients attempting to be on top of the list of forthcoming surgeries.’ Crooks knew all about that one and so did the audience as, ‘Heil Odin,’ rang around the room again. Crooks lifted his fist with the others this time without being prompted and found a few people were now beginning to nod at him. There didn’t appear to be any compassion for the dead MP from Brighton, rather just fanatical adoration for the man who had ordered the kill.

When the chanting died down again, Odin continued, ‘Bribes are paid by suppliers to the automotive industry in order to sell low-quality connectors used in safety equipment such as airbags. We’ve identified bribes being paid by suppliers to manufacturers of defibrillators to buy their low-quality capacitors. Other sections of society aren’t immune from this, either. There are financial and other advantages granted to unionists by members of the executive board of a car manufacturer, in exchange for employer-friendly positions and votes. The examples are endless. They must stop. We will make them stop.

As, ‘Heil Odin,’ once more rang around the room, Crooks fancied he could hear echoes of other halls in other parts of the country, from the live feed.

‘Up and down the country, cases exist against members of various types of non-profit and non-government organizations, as well as religious ones.

‘Ultimately, the distinction between public and private sector corruption appears rather artificial, and national anti-corruption initiatives will be needed. So, Northern England, are you with me?’

The hall in Sussex stayed silent and they all heard the chants from the live feed coming from another hall.

‘The Midlands are you with me?’ Odin shouted.

The audience around Crooks were beaming with pride and fervour.

‘The West Country?’ Odin was roaring.

‘The South of England?’

That was the cue the people around Crooks had been waiting for.
