I awoke the next morning with a restless energy, the sun filtering through the curtains and casting a warm glow on the bedroom floor. The events of the previous day still weighed heavily on my mind â the stolen manuscript, still missing, the ominous note, and the growing rift between residents and guests. Not to mention no new dreams or ideas about Laura or her murder.
I drank my coffee on the back porch and let Harper Lee roam the beach while I remembered the scene of my meltdown the day before. Since then, we still hadn't found the manuscript, but I strongly suspected that Marcia was behind it. I just had to find a way to prove it.
Georgia approached. âNo new dreams last night, huh?â
âNo,â I answered. âI honestly think this manuscript thing is overshadowing all my thoughts. And when I say it out loud, it sounds like such a stupid thing. I'm even more convinced this is a prank, though not a fun one. And somehow, it's overshadowing the more important problem of stopping a murder.â
âHerein lies the problem of a magical community,â Georgia sighed. âIs that the whole intention? Is this a diversion?â
âLet's focus on what we can do today. If we find the manuscript, it clears our names and the distraction. I'm more and more convinced that we aren't going to solve who the killer is without the dreams.â
âAgreed,â Georgia said, her tone serious. âBut first, there's something else we need to attend to.â
âRight,â I nodded, remembering Davis and Greg's date. Despite the tension on the island, life went on â and our friends deserved a chance at happiness, too. âWe'll make sure they have a great time, then get back to the investigation.â
Georgia smiled, but her eyes betrayed a hint of sadness. âSpeaking of relationships, Max and I ⦠well, we're having some difficulties.â
âGeorgia, I'm so sorry,â I said, reaching out to squeeze her hand. âDo you want to talk about it?â
âMaybe later,â she sighed. âFor now, let's just focus on the tasks at hand.â
The day passed quickly as we worked tirelessly to create the perfect atmosphere for Davis and Greg's date. By the time evening rolled around, the scene was set â a candlelit dinner beneath a canopy of twinkling fairy lights, the gentle murmur of the ocean waves providing a soothing backdrop. A gas heater to keep the chill at bay, soft blankets to keep them even warmer, and fragrant florals surrounding the tent to create a perfectly romantic and intimate venue. Cindy and Nancy were preparing the perfect sunset dinner menu of a seafood pot pie. The perfect comfort food, filled with shrimp, scallops, and lobster in a creamy sauce enriched with white wine, clam juice, and lobster base. We had done everything possible to create the perfect sunset dinner experience for them.
Davis arrived first, nervously smoothing the front of his button-down shirt and pacing as he waited for Greg to show up. âDo I look okay?â he asked, shooting me an anxious glance.
