CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Camus put his pen in its holder and gestured for Ellis to take the seat across from him. As the other man did so, Camus asked, “Are things progressing as expected?”

“They are.”

“Give me a rundown of the security, please.” Camus had little doubt it was under control but needed the reassurance, nonetheless.

Ellis closed his eyes as if checking a mental list, then opened them again. “The guests will arrive either by limo or on a designated portal space outside. They’ll be escorted by security personnel dressed as valets and footmen. That’s the first line of the internal defense since our infomancers will use their glasses to scan the new arrivals.”

Camus leaned back and steepled his fingers. “Good. Next?”

“The security process from there is pretty standard. They will pass through a sensor station that can identify metal, magic, and explosives.”

“The first two will go off for everybody, probably. We can expect all the normal subtle illusions and small magics that always occur at functions like these.”

Ellis nodded. “We’ll have a magical there to help us make the assessments if anyone warrants a closer look. We’ll also have a team on hand to give a more targeted scan if needed.”

Camus frowned as he considered the implications. “Do your best, but do not irritate the guests. We need them in a buying mood.”

“Understood. Gold Robe will arrive at seven to be on hand if any last-minute details need to be handled. The collared servants are all ready to go. They’ll be getting final instructions and checks today before the event.”

“You’ll need to collect the ones from the Robes who are no longer with us.”

Ellis offered a thin smile. “That’s already underway.”

Camus nodded in approval. “It sounds like everything is well-handled. I would have expected nothing less. I will be spending most of the day in my room downstairs. Please be available to escort me upstairs ten minutes before the event begins.”

Ellis stood, recognizing the dismissal. “Of course.”
