Chapter 16

Sarah Jane tossed the empty container that had held her California turkey club wrap from the food truck parked near the station house every day around lunchtime. She’d spent most of the morning making phone calls. Most people thought detective work was glamorous, but in reality, a lot of it came down to persistence and the ability to make phone calls.

She’d convinced Ellis Ford, the man in Angela Friedman’s photo, to come in at 1:00 pm, which hadn’t been easy. He’d been evasive, which immediately set off Sarah Jane’s suspicions. If he hadn’t agreed, she’d have no problem going to his workplace and escorting him down to the squad room. The one thing she wished she had in her arsenal was her magic.

The right compliance spell could go a long way toward helping her solve this case. Or, at least, get to the truth about Ellis Ford and his relationship with Haley. As much as she hated to admit it, her sister Cass was right. She needed her grandmother to diagnose and heal her problem. But that would take the whole coven. For that she needed nine people: her grandmother, all four of her sisters, Selena, Dalton, Susanna’s oldest daughter Freja, and of course, herself.

She’d made up with Cass, and Amy was always on her side. But the others could still be upset with her since the birthday blow up. Did she really have a choice? Not if she wanted her magic back. Sarah Jane dug her phone out of her bag, took a deep breath, and jotted off a group text to her sisters.

Sarah Jane: I know I'm the last person you want to hear from, but I need your help.

It didn't take long to get a response.

Smiley Eyes Susanna: You know we’re here for you. What's going on?

Sarah Jane: I have no doubt that either Amy or Cass has told you all that my magic is, well, let's just say it's on the fritz.

Rainey to the Rescue: What does that mean? What happens if you try to cast a spell?

Sarah Jane: It fails. It's been happening for a while now, but it's gotten worse in the last few weeks. I tried to subdue a suspect with a simple freezing spell and ended up with a black eye.

Smiley Eyes Susanna: OMG SJ! Are you all right?

Sarah Jane: I'm fine. Amy took care of me. But I think we need to call a coven meeting. And we should probably include the kids—at least Selena, Dalton and Freya. Since they’re of age. I'm assuming you'll loop Gran in on this, Rainey.

Rainey to the Rescue: Of course.

Sarah Jane: I have a case that I have to solve, and I'm afraid I can't do it without magic. I haven't confirmed this, but I think I'm dealing with a witch. And he's killing girls, young women, I guess.

Spitfire Cass: Holy shit! You didn’t say anything about that yesterday when you called me!

Smiley Eyes Susanna: This sounds like an emergency. What if we do it tomorrow night? There was a full moon a few days ago.
