CHAPTER TWELVE
âWell, hello, Petra,â said the voice of my gran over the phone. âItâs good to hear from you. How are you settling in at Ravenridge?â
âDid Mom go to school here?â I said. I was in my room, sitting on my bed with the phone against my ear. I had to know the truth.
Gran was silent on the other end.
âShe did,â I said. âShe did go to school here and you kept it from me. Why did you do that?â
âOh, thank heavens!â came Granâs voice. âYou finally know the truth and that gag spell that was put on me is broken. Iâve been trying everything to break that damned thing and having no luck whatsoever.â
âGag spell? What are you talking about?â
âSomeone put a spell on me so that I couldnât tell you about your motherâs history with Ravenridge.â
âWhy would someone do that? Who would do that?â
âI think it was the professors at the school,â she said. âThey wanted you there, and they thought that if I told you what happened to your mother, you might not want to go.â
âWhy?â I said. âWhat happened?â
âI was proud when she was accepted,â said Gran. âItâs a prestigious school, and I thought sheâd be a proper mage when she came back. But she wasnât. She was only frightened and nervous. And pregnant, of course.â
âWith me,â I said.
âYes,â said Gran.
I knew my mother had come back home pregnant and refused to ever tell anyone who my father was or how sheâd managed to get pregnant in the first place. But I didnât know that she was coming back home from Ravenridge.
Gran continued. âShe dropped out. She called me and said she didnât want to go to the school anymore, that it was too stressful, and could I please come and get her? Of course I did. When she got home, she proceeded to put up wards all over the houseâin addition to the wards I have up alreadyâand she checked them three times a day. She was always running around from room to room with smelly herb smudges, whispering strange spells under her breath. And when I tried to ask her what was wrong, she wouldnât say. But I think it was pretty clear that something happened to her at that school. Something bad.â
I was quiet. âSo, you think it was the fault of the school? You think something bad will happen to me too?â
âI couldnât say about that Petra, but I think thatâs why they put the gag spell on me. They didnât want me to scare you off with the truth. That tells me that theyâre desperate. Whatever bad thing that happened to Haidee, something worse is about to happen now.â
âThatâs comforting,â I muttered sarcastically.
âYour mother got worse and worse as the pregnancy progressed, sweetheart. And after you were born, she just seemed to⦠snap.â
âI did it to her. I made her crazy.â
âNo,â said Gran. âYou donât blame yourself. Swear to me that you wonât.â
I didnât say anything.
âPetra?â
âIâm going to leave. They lied
