As E-BURT shepherded his inquiries and Elizabeth and Matthias settled into sleep, Admiral Amaratne heard a knock at his door.

“Yes?”

His aide stuck his head into the office.

“Admirals Reardon and Ogden to see you, sir.”

“Thank you, Mitchell. That will be all for tonight. I’ll see you in the morning.”

“Thank you, sir.” The man flashed him a grateful grin, then looked worried. “Are you sure? I can stay—”

He shook his head. “No, you’ve done enough. If you’d show them in, I’ll see you in the morning.”

Mitchell stiffened to attention and threw him a quick salute. “Yessir!”

He left but returned a short moment later to usher the two admirals into the room and placed a silver tray bearing a decanter of scotch and three glasses on his desk. “I’ll see you in the morning, sir.”

“Thank you, Lieutenant.”

The man left but seemed reluctant as he closed the door behind him. Without an excuse to stay, however, he had no choice. The fleet admiral glanced from the door to his guests and caught Ogden’s slight frown as she turned toward him.

“So it’s not only me,” Amaratne observed and gestured to the small sitting area leading off from the office.

She shook her head and rolled her hand so he could see the small electronic device hidden in her palm. Two red lights gleamed and became brighter when she held it close to the tray. He nodded, scooped his tablet up, and took them through to his inner chamber. None of them relaxed until the lights showed green.

He settled into one of the leather armchairs and tapped his tablet to send them the files he hadn’t wanted to have Mitchell send on his behalf.

“This,” he began, “is the team we know as the Hooligans.”

That earned him two swift glances before the two admirals lifted their tablets and scanned the files.

“What do we want with them?” Rearden asked. “I thought they were on our side.”

“They are,” Amaratne reassured him, “and therein lies our problem.”

“Oh?”

“I believe they’ve drawn the attention of someone far less benign.”

“The X-Men?” Ogden asked and lowered her voice to a hushed whisper.

He nodded. “Ever since they retrieved the data from the Teloran ship in the Meligornian system, they’ve been shadowed by a group of Marines of which even my Marines are wary.”

At his mention of his bodyguard, Reardon looked around the room and made a show of peering into the office. “Speaking of which…”

“I convinced their captain they needed a night off—and that I was perfectly safe within my own offices.”

“Yudi… We know that might not be true,” Ogden protested but kept her voice soft. “Your aide—”

“Might not be fully aware of what he is doing,” he informed her. “As far as he knows, he’s helping the Intelligence folk to keep me safe.”

He wished it were true but he was sure Mitchell had been around long enough to know that what he was being asked to do was far enough out of the ordinary that he should at least have brought it to the attention of the Marines detailed to his protection.
