Chapter 30 Doc

Saturday, October 31st Halloween

Sam started to speak, but I was so terrified, I really couldn't follow what she was saying. She looked in my eyes, and her eyes were so brown, they were almost black. I saw her move her hand to her side. She actually removed her holster and threw it in the bushes. I screamed "No!" and started to shake my head, but Alice pushed me away and I stumbled. Then Sam had her pistol in her hand. It seemed to just appear there out of nowhere. There was a very loud bang, and Alice fell to her knees. Her gun fell to the sidewalk, and Sam kicked it away. She slowly lowered her gun, but she wasn't responding to anything.

I got up and slowly walked to her side. "Sam? Sam? Can you hear me? Are you okay. Have you been hit?" I checked her all over for blood, but there was none. I helped her to sit on the step. I took her phone from her pocket and called 911. Then I went to get her a blanket. She was in shock, and may have burst her ear drums with that gunshot in the archway.

I glanced at Alice and saw that the bleeding wasn't bad, and I knew from the site of the wound that she'd be okay. I wasn't going to touch a crazy woman who had just been holding me with a gun to my head when she was clearly not fatally wounded.

The cops and EMT's showed up, and there were so many questions. I answered everything they asked, but I had to keep them away from Sam. She was deep in shock, and was deaf, hopefully only temporarily. I promised to bring her to the station as soon as I could get her stabilized, and what with the previous attempt by Alice to kill her, and the fact that she had been holding me at gunpoint, I didn't expect much trouble. I got Sam to the couch, and then I called Beth while I grabbed my bag. She agreed to meet us at the station in a couple of hours.

I did a quick exam, checking her pulse and BP, then I looked at her ears. Her ear drums looked to be okay, but she still couldn't hear. That fact didn't stop me from chewing her a new one for risking her life, and for dumping me, and for everything, real and imagined that she might do now or ever in the future to piss me off. I knew I was being unfair, but she had scared me to death, and she had broken my heart. Of course, she did show up like the cavalry to save me. My cowgirl.

Her pulse was racing, and her BP was in stroke range. I had to get it down immediately. I wrote her a note on the back of a script page. "Do your ears hurt?"

She shook her head "no."

Then I wrote that her pulse and BP were way too high and I wanted to put a pill under her tongue.
