Chapter Seventeen – Meredith

“I have been thinking...” Keely entered the kitchen and headed for the fridge. She pulled it open and took out a bottle of wine which she placed on the counter before fetching two glasses.

Meredith opened the oven and prodded the mushroom Wellington she’d prepared along with garlic potatoes. It was cooked to perfection, the smell making her mouth water as she grabbed the oven mitts and took it out of the oven.

“Don’t you want to know what I’ve been thinking?” Keely poured the wine and picked up her glass as she leaned back on the counter.

“I figured you would tell me when you were ready.” Meredith wiped her arm across her forehead and turned to face her sister, who immediately handed her a glass of wine.

“I was thinking we should go out of town and try casting a spell.”

Meredith nearly choked on her wine at the suggestion, even though it made complete sense. “You think the spell that’s disrupting magic won’t work outside of Wishing Moon Bay? That the protection spell surrounding the town might be working in reverse and actually protecting the world beyond?”

“I think we should at least try it.” Keely gulped her wine. “What do you think?”

“I think that you are right, we should try it.” Meredith chewed the inside of her cheek as she thought it over. “Brigette could watch Jared...”

“I think Brigette should come, too.” Keely held out her hand as Meredith opened her mouth to complain. “If it works, we could continue her magic lessons outside of town. She needs to be prepared, Merri.”

“Prepared for what?” Meredith didn’t want her daughter involved in anything dangerous. She also didn’t want Brigette practicing magic outside of town.

“Whatever this is,” Keely hissed quietly.

“We came here because I wanted to keep them safe. I wanted Brigette to learn magic within the safety of Wishing Moon Bay.”

“I know and believe me, this isn’t what I want either.” Keely drained her glass and poured another. “But Brigette needs to learn to protect herself and those around her.”

Meredith closed her eyes and cleared her mind. She needed to set aside her impulse to say no. She had to trust Keely. Keely who had experience and a deep understanding of magic. Meredith would never fully understand magic because she’d never truly felt its power.

“Okay. We’ll go find out if magic works outside of town.” She placed her glass down on the counter. “Do you think the authority tested it?”

“I don’t know. But since we don’t have a hotline to them, and they are terrible at sharing information, we should try ourselves.” Keely edged toward the hallway. “How did school go?”

“Good. Jared has made a couple of friends. They’re getting together this weekend and Jared has been invited, too. It’s such a relief. I was worried that when we moved here, he would just disappear into his books.” Meredith fetched plates and set them down on the table. “He wasn’t happy at his old school.” She glanced nervously toward the stairs.
