“Ah,” said Lucy, smiling when she saw what he was holding. “I’d forgotten about Tom!” Joe never went anywhere without him – not even to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

Lucy led him to her room and, even though she’d told Joe what to expect, her little brother gasped when he saw the size of the great musk ox. He wrinkled up his nose too, when he smelled him.

“Don’t be frightened, Joe,” said the creature. “I won’t hurt you. And if you’re happy to fly through the night with me, I’ll make sure you come to no harm.”

Joe looked at Lucy and Lucy looked at Joe.

“We’ll come, Mister Musk Ox,” said Lucy, clambering over the bed to get past him to the window and open it wide.

“Hold on tight, then,” said the animal, and they climbed up on to his back, grabbing hold of his woolliness.
