CHAPTER 6
Something was coming . Something big and ugly and evil. But it wasnât playing by the rules. The Council was giving Rolf and the rest of the Pack a hard time as it was. I didnât know how we could possibly handle it. St. Lucyâs Day was here and we had yet to form anything resembling a plan. I could feel my Wolf, she wanted out. She wanted to hunt, to run, to fight. Itâs what she was born to do.
I was getting anxious so I started thinking. It was two weeks before one of the biggest feast days of them all. Christmas Day. The Hounds of God were supposed to be the Catholic Churchâs secret weapon against dark supernatural forces vying for world domination. Feast Days were special. It was when Werewolves were able to change regardless of which phase the moon was in.
I knew all this and yet, there I was, going over and over it again and again in my mind. Something was just off about the whole thing. It felt wrong. I was clearly missing something. The Church was only 2000 years old and Werewolves had been around longer. I mean I found documents that suggested they had been around earlier than that. Hmm.
I tried to imagine I was in school again. I know, I know, Iâm such a geek, but this was going to help me. See, whenever I had a test or exam coming up I always went back to my notes from the beginning of the year so I could more fully understand the material. In this case I wasnât as nearly prepared, but maybe there was somewhere else to look.
I pressed my side further into Ronan, shut my eyes and went over what I knew about the whole legend of the curse of St. Natalis. It wasnât much. I needed to speak to the only Wolf who would be able to tell me the truth. But would he answer? That wasnât something I could guarantee, but it was worth the shot.
SilverWolf sat in the corner chair. He looked relaxed. Too relaxed for it to be real. I knew he was as alert as always. We had been sitting in the compoundâs library for little less than an hour. But it was long enough. Jody and Angela had two full pages of notes after thumbing through the Athleta Christi Nobilis, the book I had found back at my school library. It told the tale of the dog-headed Saint Christopher. I had come to see him as something of a precursor to the Hounds. What else could a Cynocephali be? He just had to be a Werewolf.
SilverWolf glanced at the book one too many times for it to be a coincidence. He recognized it, but the scent coming off of him suggested he was in no mood to speak. He was dangerous and the level of his dominance or his rank was unknown to me. In fact, he didnât seem to belong to any one Pack and from what I understood that meant he was a rogue or something else.
