Chapter twenty-two

The Dragons

At this moment, an indescribable surge of emotions engulfed me, rendering me incapable of deciphering whether it was the sheer impact of these majestic beings landing before me or the overwhelming fear induced by the realization of my own small stature in their colossal presence. My bones quivered involuntarily, and the source of this tremor was— was it the reverberation from the dragons’ landing or the palpable fear that had seized every fiber of my being?

I dared not make a move; my breath was held hostage in my chest as I maintained unbroken eye contact with these awe-inspiring creatures. They stood before me, towering and magnificent, their head held high, their ethereal beauty captivating my gaze. A dichotomy of emotions churned within me—a heart brimming with both profound awe and paralyzing fear. The dragons, with their sinuous movements reminiscent of serpents, held me captive in a mesmerizing tableau.

As their heads swiveled in a serpentine fashion, I found myself frozen in place, a silent witness to the majestic ballet unfolding before me. The intensity of their gaze, akin to the piercing eyes of eagles, pinned me down like prey ensnared by an apex predator.

The trio advanced toward me slowly and steadily, synchronized in their approach, the very ground beneath me quivering with their powerful strides. In the deafening silence, broken only by the rhythmic thud of their footsteps, an unsettling realization took root—this might well be my final day. Yet, amidst the paralyzing fear, a whispered solace flitted through my thoughts; at least, I told myself; I had seen these beautiful creatures today. I can die peacefully now. I think. I was rambling in my head.

The dragons’ eyes, sharp and unwavering, seemed to dissect my very soul, each step forward echoing the inevitability of my vulnerability. I stood, a mere speck in the vast expanse of their dominion, dwarfed by their immense presence. In this juncture of uncertainty, my heart oscillated between the terror of the unknown and the gratitude for having glimpsed a manifestation of beauty and power beyond the realms of ordinary existence. But maybe they were hungry, and since I was the only eatable thing. I frantically looked around. The black one huffed a puff of steam from its nose. And I froze. Okay. No movement.

They created an ominous circle around me, akin to predators closing in on their prey. Among them, the black dragon seemed to take a particular interest, its nostrils flaring as it caught the scent of my fear. Despite its comparatively smaller size, the looming presence of this obsidian-hued creature instilled a profound sense of vulnerability; a mere blink could render me a meal in its voracious jaws. Immobilized by fear, I stood helplessly as the dragons drew nearer, their sharp eyes scrutinizing me with such intensity as if they were studying me, my every breath, every motion, my very presence.

They must have seen a human for the first time.

The black dragon, though smaller in stature, exuded an aura of primal menace, its predatory instincts finely tuned.
