CHAPTER TWELVE

Camila

It’s been a busy afternoon running around, which is why I’ve been ignoring my mom’s phone calls. I don’t have the energy to get into it with her right now, and I know she wants to pin down a date for me to come to Utah and meet Mr. Right two-point-oh. I can’t avoid her forever, but I can for another week. Maybe a month. Then I’ll have to bite the bullet and at least shake hands with the guy. The conversation about not marrying him can wait a few more months after that. I hope?

Yes, I’m buying time. No, I don’t know what else to do.

I already grabbed Jed’s meds and supplies from the grocery store—frozen lasagna, two-percent milk, eggs, ham, and bread for the no-frills man staying with me—and I am in the winery’s parking lot just outside Jed’s trailer. I unlock the door with the key he gave me, and I step inside.

Wow. It’s so…clean. The bed is neatly made, the mini kitchen is spotless, and not one thing has been left out. Not a sock or empty beer can in sight.

Guess I was wrong about him living like a pig. I wonder if it’s his military background that’s made him into a neat freak. Whatever the case, it’s totally hot. Like, heat crawling up your neck and down to your torso hot. Nothing sexier than a man who knows how to organize and clean. I wonder if he owns a scientific calculator.

I know there’s no time to find out, since he’s back at my house suffering, so I grab his toiletries, noting he wears an expensive brand of all-natural deodorant. There’s a bottle of Fucking Fabulous on the vanity, too. I knew it! That cologne is expensive stuff, but now that I know he’s rich, maybe he bought it for himself. Not that he seems like the type to engage in frivolous spending, but I’m getting the impression he buys the things he likes or wants. Wineries, for example?

I place the items on his beige bedspread and open the narrow little closet to the right of the door.

Wow. It’s filled with books, all stacked neatly on their sides. I tilt my head and read the titles. There are all sorts of interesting topics here: history of ancient Rome, beginner’s Greek, organic farming, chemistry, and…I pluck a paperback from the middle of the stack.

What is this? It’s one of those corny romance novels. I smile, staring at the picture of the cowboy kissing a blonde woman in a frilly dress. “Well, well, well. Guess I was wrong about those Hallmark books.” I love it. I love that he reads all this brainy stuff and enjoys a little fantasy. I wonder if it’s a coincidence that the woman on the cover kind of looks like me? The thought makes my heart tingle, until I remind myself that Jed is a man who doesn’t beat around the bush. If he said he wasn’t interested in me, he meant it.
