While the victory at Stirling Bridge decisively swung the war’s momentum behind the Scots, it came at a cost. Andrew Murray was grievously injured during the battle and died in early November. Despite his injuries, over the two months between Stirling Bridge and his death, Murray and Wallace worked together as leaders not only of the Scottish army but of the country as a whole. In October, the two sent missives to the mayors and communes of Hamburg and Lübeck in an attempt to restore trading relations with Germany, and in early November, Wallace followed up this attempt at diplomacy by securing the election of William Lamberton, who turned out to be staunchly anti-English, as the bishop of St. Andrews. Around that time, Murray passed away from the wounds he had sustained at Stirling Bridge, leaving the burden of defending Scotland solely on Wallace’s shoulders. For the next year, Wallace would hold the highest rank of power and authority in Scotland.
