Chapter Ten

“Thursday”

I waited all night for the cops to show up. They never did. Thursday morning I pulled back the curtains and the sunlight flooded the room. I could feel the heat on my face as I stood at the big picture window. They'd predicted a beautiful day, and they were right for once. Tori had mentioned riding out to the beach to see the sunset. I wondered if that was still going to happen. She knocked on my door at eight thirty that morning. For some reason I decided not to answer the door. The garage door was shut. Tori couldn't see my car in there. She had no idea if I was home or not.

I watched from the window as she crossed the street, returning to her house. Twenty-five minutes later, her friend in the Subaru picked her and Brandon up, and they drove off. Maybe Monday and Thursday was their regular breakfast day. I checked my watch. I should be able to make Richmond by twelve thirty. This would give me enough time to grab something to eat and pick up a few groceries.

Bob had called me late the night before. I didn't mention the fracas with Tori's ex because I knew I'd come damn close to blowing my cover—again—and didn't want to get my ass chewed—again—for being a so-called loose cannon. He told me to meet a man named Turk in Henrico, Virginia at two o'clock. Henrico is a suburb of Richmond. Turk had a package for me. If I met Turk at the Lakeside Tavern at two, I would be back in Chincoteague before five. Sunset would take place at six fifteen. Plenty of time to see the sunset. I hopped in my car and headed for Richmond.
